I bought an external NAS drive and even though Windows gives me the options of NTFS or exFAT the former doesn't work. I have single archives bigger than 4 GB so FAT32 isn't going to cut it.

Any ideas?

What model/make is it?. Can you access tech support for advice?. is it possible to Format external drive in NTFS using DOS?. Open a command window by going to Start, then Run and typing in CMD, typing in the following command at the prompt: format /FS:NTFS X:. There is http://www.compuapps.com/index.php?...e-premium&catid=48:drive-managment&Itemid=190. I'm no expert in this field, so double check with someone who has greater knowledge.

Thanks, it's just a generic make from eBay. From what I can tell exFAT supports files bigger than 4 GB by a long shot so I can survive with that but I normally try to use NTFS so it feels a bit weird.

Any more views?

Been on 0 for over 5 minutes ...

oh dear, I would not recommend manually trying to format it to NTFS unless the NAS itself can format it to NTFS, the is a good chance the NAS itself can only read FAT32 and not NTFS hence why it has no option to reformat to NTFS from the browser interface

It's on 45% now, but it's taken SSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOO many hours.

I think I could survive with exFAT ... I think ...

Interestingly enough, I bought a USB stick today and it did NTFS in seconds ... it was only 4 GB.

It took 26 hours but FINALLY it formatted :D. Thanks for your help.

I am wodnering though ... as I esentially forced the format is that going toa ffect the drive in any way?
