Extra memory for my computer.

Hi,
I'm looking at buying maybe 2gb more memory but I've heard you can't just buy anything if you already have some.

I've got a Geil Ultra series 4gb (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel kit. Does this mean I have to get another one which is no better than the 2133MHz?

motherboard: gigabyte ga-p55-us3l intel p55 (socket 1156) ddr3.

Thanks for any help.

The memory does have to be DDR3 and it's advisible to get memory as close in speed/timings as possible - ideally the same brand and model.

Additional: When you say 2Gb more do you mean 1 stick of 2Gb or 2 sticks of 1Gb? Ideally it needs to be the latter so your system runs in dual channel mode e.g. Geil Ultra series 2gb (2x1GB) PC3-17000 Dual Channel kit - or a 2 x 1Gb kit with speed/timings as close as possible to the Geil Ultra.

TBH, memory is so cheap you may as well just stick in another 4Gb - if you need more memory.

yea might as well do another 2x2gb.
I can only see 3x2gb and they're all pc3-12800c9 1200MHz would these be bad?
my motherboard has only two free slots so would rather get 2x4gb then 3x2gb.

I take it its more important to have the same MHz rather than the make?

If you buy slower RAM then you'll either have to try and overclock it to match your existing RAM or downclock your existing RAM to the speed of the new RAM.

Either way they both have to work at the same speed in your PC.

Your existing RAM works at 9-9-9-28, 2133MHz at 1.65V

The G.Skill works at 9-11-9-28, 2133MHz at 1.55-165V

You'll have to set the timings and voltage so that both sets run happily.

The G.Skill is probably as close as you're going to get without buying more of exactly the same Geil RAM.

ok convinced I'll get the g.skill you linked.
I have no idea how to set the timings and voltage, is this needed with the g.skill right?
Is it all done on the beginning screens after pressing F1 (or one of the F's) on start-up?
sorry really don't know about the ins and outs of computers!! :(

It's done in the BIOS.

Accessed by pressing the Delete key during startup.

I assume you have a 64 bit operating system so you can make use of 8GB of RAM?

Also note that if your system is overclocked this may be affected by filling all 4 RAM slots.

yea 64bit windows 7.

so what exactly would i have to change in the bios? only bother explaining if its simple enough! would it just be to change the voltage of the new ones to 1.65v and the CAS latency to 9-9-9-28?

You may need to change the timings to 9-11-9-28 to match the G.Skill.

Start with 1.65V and you may be able to reduce it a little if reducing it doesn't cause instability.

i have a pc which has 1333mhz 2x2gb adata ram in a1 an a2 and geil value 1333mhz 2x2gb in b1 an b2 all bought from overclockers and it runs fine dual channel i think u need to try an make sure tht both slots like a1 and a2 has the identical sticks an the other 2 spare slots has matching sticks in b1 an b2 for example if tht makes any sense:)plus it helps if u keep all the ram at the same speed in mhz :)
