With the spec in my sig, it's taking me 2-3 minutes or more to extract rar's of around 700mb, now I'm sure this isn't normal.

I suspect it has something to do with my Raid 5 array or hard discs? But unsure of why, I know Raid 5 doesn't offer the best performance, but surely it shouldn't be this bad?

It depends on how many files/the size of the files in the RAR and the amount of compression.

Just unrared 20,700 files from a 700MB archive with normal compression in 1.47 using my single WD5000AAKS 500GB Western Digital storage drive.

Depends on how its Archived.

There is a right and wrong way, if its got a MAIN .RAR, then .RAR00 then .RAR01 and so on its correct and I can unrar 350MB (TV Eps) in 4 secs and 700MB (Movies) in 9 secs.

This was on Raptor X Raid and now VelicoRaptor non Raid (aint tried Raid yet on new HDD's).

Let me know when you do please! Dying to see some decent performance information for VRs in RAID 0.

Jesus, I was unraring in 30secs back on my old NF2 with a normal SATA150 Maxtor HDD.

If its Rared weirdly and not like I stated above it can take longer, I give you that.

depends how much compression is used.

also, 7zip is much faster at unpacking, press F9 in the main window (to get two windows) and extract from one window to the other, by dragging, doesn't mess about moving it to a temporary folder that way. so it's quicker again

didn't say anywhere about 'normal' compression.. i'm suggesting to use 7zip to unrar it..

confusion?!

As said above, it depends on the amount of compression.

6 seconds to uncompress a file that's been compressed on the lowest setting.

Hmm, that's strange then. I can confirm that the array is working perfectly purely from the fact that everything on my PC (especially games) loads quicker than my brothers single 500GB Samsung F1. I can also see/feel the difference as this system used to be a single 5000AAKS drive.

26 seconds on a file compressed with WinRAR (normal compression) unrared with 7-zip.

Weird, I did dragged and dropped the AVI out of the RAR onto my desktop instead of using the right click context menu and it took 17 seconds with WinRAR

BTW, I have stated these are split files in the Archive, but I'm now testing a 700MB (exactly) .AVI by making it 1 RAR.

Hmm, you have no confirmed you ain't using Winrar to extract, hmm cant compare to my tests then.

Bledd how is 7zip "quicker" than winrar? From your explanation i guess it works a little like a norton commander interface? But i don't see the need in even opening a winrar window i just right click and drag/extract to whatever folder i need things to be extracted. All within the windows explorer interface, how can anything be any quicker?
