Extracting rar's

BTW, I have stated these are split files in the Archive, but I'm now testing a 700MB (exactly) .AVI by making it 1 RAR.

Hmm, you have no confirmed you ain't using Winrar to extract, hmm cant compare to my tests then.

I have tested both WinRAR and 7-zip

WinRAR (drag and drop AVI from the archive) - 17 seconds
7-zip (right click, extract to...) - 26 seconds

Its deff slower to unrar 1 big 700MB file than when its split into smaller bits.

I always use Winrar and sometimes just right click and choose extract here.

The next time I download a "cough Movie" thats in multiple .RAR's but done correctly as stated in post #5, I will capture it extracting in 9secs. ;)

Bledd how is 7zip "quicker" than winrar? From your explanation i guess it works a little like a norton commander interface? But i don't see the need in even opening a winrar window i just right click and drag/extract to whatever folder i need things to be extracted. All within the windows explorer interface, how can anything be any quicker?

winrar copies to a temp location first, then moves the files to where you selected (or at least it used to..)

will have a look again

Stuff from usenet is compressed using store mode ;)

Mines are not from there and as private sites are governed by rules, must be compressed using Winrar and normal method and split into X size parts.

This is so all peeps can extract it, if you start messing with exotic app's or settings it causes trouble for others.

That's also why when I was part of #Winbeta we only used Winrar FINAL builds no Betas as we could not afford to give peeps trouble with extraction.

They were told no support unless you extract using latest FINAL build of Winrar.

The site I use is also governed by rules, as are most Usenet servers. A general rule of Usenet is to use store mode if the file can't be compressed further to avoid wasting people's resources and time.

Create your own archive in 15,000,000 byte parts using normal compression mode, it won't unRAR in 6 seconds. Create another archive also in 15,000,000 bytes parts using store compression mode, it'll unRAR in around 6 seconds.

Takes me circa 3.6s to extract a HD-TV show of about 800mb, in 'store' mode. 1080p rips of about 9gb take about 80s.

Q6600
RAID0 Samsung 250gb.

Any chance of a video then? Make an archive (split into 15,000,000 byte files) from a 700MB AVI using normal compression, then unRAR it.

We most both be doing something very different to get such time differences

Admittedly not 700mb, but 600mb. I don't download any SD avi's any more but you get the idea, that was 10 archives at 67mb each.

As I said, I will make a capture next time I grab a 700MB AVI (being carefull as of rules here ).

Also as I said "Store Mode" aint been in Winrar long it was always "Normal Mode" which wont take many MB's of a 700MB file as the .AVI is as you stated already compressed. ;)

I just did a 700mb split into 15mb parts, came out at 692mb and took 14s to extract. So I to am intrigued by your speeds!

Ok, so back on topic, does anyone have any suggestions why it takes me nearly 3 minutes to extract a rar (Which, as it happens would be downloaded from usenet).
