UK insurance companies are a bunch of greedy ****'s making loads of profit ( the UK roads are safer than here so saying they have to pay up more for accidents is BS), but it also shows me the past Dutch left wing governments are ripping off motorists and trying to discourage driving going by the rules for taking lessons and the taxes...

Last time i checked insurance premiums in the UK are very competitive in comparison to other countries. Certainly in the USA (where i have recently ran a quote for my same car, for equivalent cover, with Progressive) my insurance is cheaper here. The UK insurance market is extremely competitive, possibly the most competitive in the world. They operate on a near 1:1 payout to premium ratio only making profit from investments off the back of the held capital of the premiums. Just to reiterate, there is no profit in insurance premiums as such, as far as i am aware. They are literally cost price in this country.

Infact driving in the UK is very cheap in general bar our rip off fuel. I have no idea what the moaning is ever about, we have it incredibly easy.

The fixed costs for a 25 year old male driving a Mercedes S430 (4.3 V8 auto saloon) are roughly;

£200 ish tax
£400 ish insurance
£25 MOT

Thats IT. £625 per year to keep a Mercedes V8 legal and on the road, as a young male driver. It is hard to imagine how it could possibly be any cheaper than it already is.

Expensive my arse :)

This, motoring in England is insanely cheap, once you take into account the average wage and particularly second hand car prices.

Motoring in Canada is about 1/3rd of the price of the UK on average I found (I don't know about the insurance though), but used cars are rather more expensive, new cars tend to be a a little cheaper ...however, if you need any repairs doing or bodywork etc and you have to pay for it yourself ...that is very expensive indeed.

The one thing I don't know about is their insurance costs, but tax and fuel are much, much cheaper. My uncle reckons it's all round cheaper motoring in Canada, period. Although many other things are more expensive mind.

Pretty sure you can't ride a moped with a car license now.

From direct.gov.uk

If you have a car licence...

If you obtained your full car licence before 1 February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates (D-plates in Wales).

If you obtained a full car licence after 1 February 2001 you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL 196 certificate to validate your entitlement.

I've had my licence for over a year now, along with a year of NCB (well, it's actually 2 years NCB, but they don't count my year I had on provisional) and they're still wanting to charge me £1800 for insurance on a VW Golf 1.4. IIRC it was about £1300 when I had 0 years NCB and 0 years licence :rolleyes:

I don't know if it's the company who are quoting me, or the area I live in, but every other car I've put in is also stupidly priced.

Yes, it's cheap when you're older, but they really do shaft young drivers.
