Eyefinity vs 3d

The 3D Vision glasses are fairly comfortable as far as that goes - but even on games where it works really well like batman after 30minutes or so I felt mildly fatigued and just felt like the game played better with normal "2D" 3D.

the choice could also come down to the amount of physical space available to you.

3x 22/24inch monitors requires a lot of desk space. (you can use smaller but then what's the point?)

1 3d monitor less space.

eye infinity is also something you could build up to... get 1 monitor now and add one each month or when funds are available.

I guess that sounds the most reasonable plan

I'd get the GTX460, simply because, as others have said, for a 3-monitor set-up with either card, you'd need two of the cards to be able to cope well with the resolution. The GTX460 is a bit cheaper, not too dissimilar in performance (though is worse than the 5850, though 460 SLi vs 5850 Xfire might be an interesting comparison), and you could use 3D Vision as well, meaning you wouldn't have to choose.

Having said that, you can use 3D with ATI cards too, using 3rd party drivers from iZ3D or DDD, but their efforts are less polished than Nvidia's drivers (only DX9 support for example).
