Just came across this article and have to say its pretty amazing how far medicine has come now...in that you have open heart surgery whilst your 'awake' so to speak.

I wonder whats next in the field of medicine and surgery...what makes it more amazing that this was done over 600 times in India of all countries...pretty good going for a country thats has a lot of poor people

LOL@the guys face though:p:D

I really wouldn't want that.

I had an op on my stomach a couple of years back; only keyhole but it was nice to just 'wake up' and it be finished, rather than have to be awake and endure the entire length of the operation. Even with the selective amnesia.

I agree having had minor surgery several times, I'd rather go to sleep for half a day and not have even the faintest recollection of what goes on in the theatre.

That's a little grim!

True thing about wanting to be out cold. Especially if something goes wrong and the surgeons begin to panic!

Does the epidural just numb or does it temporarily paralyze too?

I wouldn't mind listening to some Floyd while being operated :p.

*Shineee on you craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy diamond*

Screw that

Although waking up in pain in an operating theatre isn't pleasant (when they bring you back around I mean), it would be so boring to be just lying there whilst you're operated on. Boring and scary :D

Painful or not, the feeling of having your sternum split and separated would freak me the hell out!

The local anesthetic used paralyzes the body.

I was offered an epidural for the pinning of my broken leg..

I opted out and went for general anaesthetic based on the fact that I'd rather not hear and smell them drilling and removing the marrow from my femur, after cutting open my leg.

I'm pretty sure I would take general anaesthetic for cardiac surgery - regardless of the potential medical benefits. I can't imagine it's nice hearing your chest cracked open!
