Toyota confirm Glock signing

Wasn't expecting this until the Toyota do at Fuji next weekend. Not sure what this says about how Toyota are thinking, Glock's obviously reasonably quick otherwise he wouldn't have been in the BMW test seat but surely Toyota need a big name driver to push the team forward?

Perhaps they are content to be a back/middle of the pack team? If they were serious, they wouldve bent over backwards to attempt to get Alonso to join them. Strange when you consider that they have the biggest budget in F1.

Exactly, I don't understand what Toyota are in F1 for. They've had opportunities to be successful but have thrown them away - sacking Mike Gascoyne because he was doing what you hired him to do was possibly the most stupid management decision I've seen in a long time.

Yeah they need someone who is proven to be quick plus one from GP2 (or similar). I expect Glock will do OK though.

Flav: 60% chance Alonso will race for Renault

There is a “60 percent chance” that Fernando Alonso will race for Renault next season, according to team boss Flavio Briatore.

Having recently confirmed his split with McLaren, Alonso is currently a free agent and is thought most likely to return to the team with which he won his two world titles.

Briatore has made no secret of his desire to lure Alonso back, and believes he is now closing in on a deal to secure the Spaniard’s services.

“Renault will certainly have different drivers next year,” Briatore was quoted as saying by Italy’s ANSA news agency.

“There is a 60% chance Alonso will be with us.”

Toyota, one of the teams believed to have stirred Alonso’s interest, announced on Monday that it had signed GP2 champion Timo Glock.

While some doubts have been raised about how watertight Jarno Trulli’s contract is, on the face of it the Glock signing narrows Alonso’s options to Red Bull or Renault – and Red Bull boss Christian Horner predicted earlier this week that the double world champion would return to the Anglo-French team.

“Toyota and Red Bull are also in the race for [Alonso’s services],” Briatore said.

“We have an advantage because we know him.”

Alonso is widely expected to delay his decision until he knows the outcome of the World Motor Sport Council hearing on December 6, where Renault will face charges of illegally possessing confidential McLaren information.

But Briatore claims the team will finalise its 2008 driver line-up imminently.

“It will be decided between today and the day after tomorrow,” he said.

Instead he gave a different reason why a deal has not yet been struck: “When you marry, split up and get back together it is not easy.”

I can only see him going back to Renault now?

So is Heiki going to partner Lewis next year?

I felt quite sorry for Heiki this year. Had an iffy start, Flav didn't really take a shine to him and to have The Piquet's over your shoulder at nearly every race eyeing up your job - couldn't have been easy.

So the reason for McLaren's appeal being rejected has been revealed - they should have protested the result rather than appealing a decision because you can't appeal a steward's decision unless that decision relates to your own team.

Now this is where things get interesting. I can't find anything which says when the fuel readings were taken relative to the official results being posted. Teams only have 30 minutes to protest the results once the official results have been posted.

I think Kovalainen has also been dropped:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7076762.stm

Speaking on Italian radio, he also suggested current drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen would not be retained by Renault for 2008.

"We'll definitely have different drivers next year," Briatore said.

I think its almost a dead cert that Alonso will be with Renault next year, unless Toyota or RBR terminate the contract of one of their drivers, which would be an unusual step. But then it is unusual to see someone of the callibre of Alonso to still be looking for drive in November.

has that been confirmed, or is it just a reference to Flav saying 'we'll definately have two new drivers next year"?

Heard it on Radio 1 about 20 mins ago, can't find any Internet articles as yet though. The driver market is very interesting this year, I am not keen on Mclaren having 2 drivers only in there second year of F1 each; would be better with some solid experience in the team surely? Button would have been ideal but that isn't going to happen...could there be anyone but Heiki now?

Yeah it was on the Radio 1 today. I don't think the BBC would run it if it wasn't accurate.

As Memphis said - about time as well!

Don't think Radio 1 is the font of all F1 knowledge! I don't think it has been confirmed that Fisi has got the chop for definite (yet), but there are hints: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/64060
Well they are the BBC, albeit dumbed down even further :p They were first with news on Alonso leaving McLaren, before it was covered online (as like today as well).
