https://twitter.com/CosworthF1 What’s everyone think of ’13 F1 engine regs? 1600cc Turbo & KERS electric motor together producing over 700bhp –same speeds 35% less fuel!

Nothing official as you say but 600hp n/a is not very green in terms of dev, cheaper and easier to stick a blower on.

Is it possible to run an engine with such high fuel pressure without forced air too?

On the subject of Cosworth, did anyone notice their engines were 100% reliable in 2010 - not one race failure? Quick enough too in the Williams. Not bad for their first year back.

with these new floors coming in, couldnt 1 skip over the gravel trap could end your race, even if you make it out?

what does one of these underfloors look like?

In the next 30 days, you should see most of the team unveil their new cars (if previous years are anything to go by), but obviously the big day will be the first pre-season test. This shall give us a very good idea of what sort of car the teams have produced.

Of particular interest to me is RBR. For the past 2 years, where they have had the 1st or 2nd best car, they have not turned up to the first test. Theoretically, this has robbed them of testing time and should've given their rivals the advantage, however, as we all now know, they produced a great car. This year however, RBR have said that they aim to be present in the first test of the season. Perhaps with the introduction of KERS, they do not feel as confident as they did in the previous 2 seasons.

I said this last year and I shall state the same again this year, providing Ferrari give Alonso a decent car, he has to be favourite for the title. The same will go for Hamilton, who I believe should be better than he was last year (for reasons that some people on this forum will not agree with). Ultimately, it all depends on whether a team (other than Ferrari/McLaren), can produce a car which is 0.5s-1s/lap faster than the competition, to negate the skill advantage which Alonso/Hamilton posses (which is what RBR did last year).

Its going to be all about the tyres. Even a mid field team that get it just right could leap up (but not necessarily keep up there for the whole championship).

It'll be interesting to see whether any of the teams use non-battery based KERS systems - the most likely candidate, Williams, have already said they will be using a battery based system - but there do seem to be a number of advantages to the Flywheel systems, and the recent rumours of McLaren not using the Mercedes system are interesting.

How F1 can try to portray KERS as a green technology when you have to throw away battery packs every other race is a bit of a joke - especially if there is a viable alternatives (flywheels and supercapacitors).

Looking at the flybrid site there are several flywheel based options that could be used under the current rules next year:

The original Flywheel with CVT gearbox.

CFT KERS reduces volume and weight (under 18kg).

The flywheel capacitor system uses a Magneti Marelli electric motor (same as Ferrari and Renault KERS in 2009) but the flywheel instead of batteries to store the energy.

The only downsides seem to be less flexibility in packaging, so presumably an increase in centre of gravity when you can line batteries along the base of the sidepods.

It's not a rumour. McLaren have said that their system will be more hydraulic than electronic. Most likely running a development of their own hydraulic KERS that they first attempted to run in F1 in 1998
