F1 2013 Testing: Week 1 Jerez

Once again good to see the boys at Honda, I mean Merc haven't forgotten how not to build a car! It takes an entire day to replace a wiring loom?? Sounds a little suspicious considering they can replace an entire engine on the car in a matter of hours.

Lewis will be driving the W04 like his pants are on fire tomorrow, which they might well actually be, literally!

More likely they just don't have a spare in Spain. Overnight parts from UK, innit.

Why all the sudden massive hate for Merc (not just here, it seems to be all the press are talking about too)? McLaren spent half a day in the pits with yet another fuel pump problem, a return of an issue that hindered them all last year, but its been completely overlooked in favour of people going "Lol, Mercedes built a dog again, there so rubbish" based on 11 laps of running...

Its all a bit odd. Seems the hate bandwagon has already shifted from Vettel to Mercedes for this year.

It's either frustrated Lewis Hamilton fans, or people that hate Lewis Hamilton now hating on Mercedes.

Either way, it's quite amusing considering it is the first day of the first test.

Jenson Button's pre-season got off to an almost perfect as the McLaren driver set the pace at Jerez despite his early morning stoppage.

As the Formula One teams pitted their 2013 cars against one another at Jerez, the action began with 11 cars out on track but ended with just ten as Mercedes were unable to recover from their early woes.

Mercedes called it quits around midday after an electrical problem - the result of a faulty wiring loom - sparked a fire in Nico Rosberg's car during the morning's session.

The German, who had covered just 11 laps with a best time of 1:20.846, was forced to stop out on track as the flames licked the right rear of his new W04.

Rosberg's car was returned to the pits on the back of a flat-bed truck, however, hours later Mercedes revealed they would not be continuing for the day.

"After identifying the cause of the problem we will not be running again today whilst parts are modified ready for tomorrow," said the team via Twitter.

"The part which requires modification is the wiring loom where the electrical fault originated this morning."

Rosberg was joined on the sidelines for several hours by Day One's pace-setter Button who brought out the day's first red flag when he broke down after just three laps.

It emerged that a fuel pump-related issue was the cause of the McLaren driver's stoppage. "Not a good start," said team boss Martin Whitmarsh.

But by the end of the day it was a great start for McLaren as Button, who recovered to complete 37 laps, set the pace with a 1:18.861.

That put the 2009 World Champion 0.848s up on Mark Webber, who had the honour of being the first to run the new Red Bull racer, the RB9.

Romain Grosjean, who had a late start to the morning but had been leading by midday, finished third quickest but still within a second of Button's best.

Paul di Resta in his Force India VJM06 had a promising start was he was fourth quickest ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Felipe Massa.

Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg made his Sauber bow, finishing seventh quickest, while Giedo van der Garde was in action for Caterham and Max Chilton for Marussia. They finished three and five seconds off the pace respectively.

It was the first hour of the first day of the first test. An an hour where Rosberg was initially quickest, and very positive about how fast he could push the car right from the off. A shortage of spare wiring looms aside, the little information we have on Merc actually shows quite a positive start.

Hopefully Hamilton can get some good running in tomorrow and start to silence those determined to write Mercedes off already.

No, that was Schumacher :p

and hamilton last time he had a car down near the midfield .

schumachers karting this year btw :D

sounds like that other year where they had the fastest times in one of the last sessions but come the first race they were nowhere so we wont really learn much from testing other than reliability

Funny thing is last season Merc were a laughing stock on here, now Lewis is there then some feel the need to suddenly protect them :)

The speed must be in that Mercedes somewhere. Rosberg was dominant in China and they were quite handy in Monaco as well (Rosberg finished second, Schumi pole (time wise anyway))

2 good races doth not a great season make. There is a lot of work to do, Merc know that.

I just think 11 laps on the first day of testing is far to little information to draw any opinions from, let alone start laying it in stone that they are nothing more than an also ran whos car will blow up every race, which seems to be the conclusions around already.

I mean look at Ferrari. Plenty of laps, but there fastest time is behind Force India and Toro Rosso. Are people writing off their chances of getting out the midfield already? No, of course not.

Felipe Massa says Ferrari is on a 'different planet' compared to the difficult situation it found itself in during pre-season Formula 1 testing last year, after getting his first impressions of the new F138 at Jerez on Tuesday.

The Brazilian ended the day sixth on the timesheets, but was not too worried about the lap times, because most importantly Ferrari had banished the prospect of a repeat of 2012's opening test nightmare.

"I think if you compare to last year it is a completely different planet," said Massa, when asked by AUTOSPORT about how his first day's running with the new car compared to 12 months ago.

"Last year I remember we were struggling a lot to drive the car. It was tricky to keep the car on the track, so this year the base on the car is completely different to last year.

"The car is much more balanced. I felt a good direction on the rear of the car as well, with traction. This is a track that is very difficult on the rear, degradation is very high. I would say that the difference to last year is huge."

Massa said early issues with the F138 have cropped up - like the need to improve cooling in the cockpit - but there were no alarm bells ringing about significant performance problems.

"I don't think it is a difficult thing to fix," he said. "I am not disappointed definitely.

"The 1m18.8s [lap time of Jenson Button] is an incredible time definitely, but the 1m19.7s [of second fastest Mark Webber] I don't think is.

"If you look at the first day, looking at how we ran, how we drove and the direction we had for the first day, I am not really disappointed.

"There is a lot to do, a lot to work on, a lot to develop on the car for the first race. That is clear. But I am not disappointed."

Good news :D

Its not sudden hate for Merc at all. I supported them throughout the Schui years, mainly because of Schui but I actually felt that Brawn et al could make a championship winning car (how wrong was I!). Maybe they will this year, hopefully!

However, it just seems that the fundamental people at Merc (which is why I keep harking back to Honda) don't know how to make a decent car, despite having every brain box, £££ of funding and quite possibly the best engine on the grid. Its frustrating more than hating TBH.

Well, after one day of testing I think we can all conclusively, and without a shadow of doubt, conclude that McLaren are going to win this season and Lewis will spend the whole season kicking himself in that dog of a car. Yup, it's sewn up already.
