F1 2013 Testing: Week 1 Jerez

The intake holes themselves aren't that much smaller, its the rest of the pods that are. On most other cars they continue to expand outwards from the openings as they go back, before sweeping back in again towards the rear. While the Saubers just... don't. I'm trying to find a cutaway to show whats usually stored in the sidepods to understand what they could have moved?

To be honest, part of me hopes that does happen to teach him a lesson about getting a good sports management team behind you.

Is this a joke, Alonso I'm pretty sure said Hamilton was the best driver on the grid last year, he WAS the best driver on the grid last year, Whitmarsh said his drive with a broken suspension was the best won point EVER at Mclaren, when most drivers would either have simply given up, or not been nearly as fast with such a damaged car.

Hamilton had a great season, with a car that failed him frequently. Without the pitstop failures and car failures, he was well in there for the title fight. So what management team does he need around him, will they fix the car better for him or make less mistakes in pit stops?

Hamilton could have a truly fantastic year driving this year, and come 5th in the title race, or he could have a bad year driving, and win the thing. If Merc have the single best car on the grid, he could screw up several races with mistakes of his own and still win the title, or he could have the 5th best car, vastly out perform it and use superior driving skill to get the car well above where it deserves to be in every race.

Yeah, its great to have a car capable of winning the title, set that as your target, and go and win it, but 23 drivers don't win it every year, they still race, they still have targets, and they can still beat them every race.

AS for getting anything from preseason testing, with essentially no data, and pure guesswork and writing off or talking up any team... lol. Wasn't the lotus fastest at this stage last year, how did that work out?

Hamilton would love a car capable of winning the title, but he's a racer, if he's got the fastest car and comes first, the 5th fastest car and comes 4th, the 10th fastest car and comes 8th, its all beating your target, just a different target.

Better drivers in the lower teams is better for the sport IMHO. Best drivers in the two fastest cars, who race off into the distance and everyone else is crap... is boring.

Plonker aside, every time I see a picture of the Williams, I am just amazed at how small they've got the back end. I mean, look at the sweep down of the bodywork (not the fin). You can't see just how low the gearbox is from that shot, but it always gets me just how... empty the back of that car is!

You forget Kimi I guess.

Apologies, but even so its still been 5 seasons + , not an inconsiderable time considering not that many years ago it was unthinkable that non-factory based cars/drivers could win the title

(and even then its debatable that Kimi's title was gift wrapped from a non-works team lol)

Same story as yesterday, looking promising then scuppered.

I can't imagine they will be out again today.

^ Haha :D

One of the differences he mentioned was the Merc. has 6 settings for brake bias, whereas the McLaren only had 3. He's got a lot of learning to do in the car, wondering if that's a contributing factor to the off?

The front wing is damaged. Unless they have spares it could mean the end of the test for Mercedes. I don't know how many they produce of development parts, but I can't imagine they will have loads stocked up.

Do they still have 2 cars there, or do drivers share a car for the test?

Just wondering if they could nick Rosberg's, if that's not the one they were already using?
