Ambient temperature and more importantly track temperature plays a significant role in the degradation of the tyres.

While they will certainly improve over what's been seen in testing so far, they are still tyres designed to wear out quicker than last years, but with no change to the amount they are allocated.

Q3 will be empty. :(

Yeah they really need to address the allocation.

its probably old news to you guys, but red bull and lotus could be in a bit of trouble with engine maps:

Red bull and lotus thought that the august 2012 directive for engine maps didnt stand in 2013, but as far as the FIA are concerned it still stands. since they have probably designed their cars around more efficient EBDs it could hamper them in the first few events

The tyres were barely wearing out at all by the end of last year, at the beginning it was much worse, considering in terrible conditions we saw a few cars complete around 20 laps without too many problems and no massive tyre deg, I doubt it will be a major issue, but I doubt we'll know till the first race. ultimately much worse than the last race last year could still be better than the first race last year.

You've also got to factor in the guy who had the most issues(or was most vocal) has gone from the car that saved tyres the best, to one that was less good, but on top of that you have teams all proclaiming their cars can't win, they won't be competitive at Melbourne, the tyres don't work on their car, etc, etc, half of everything they say is BS anyway.

It also wasn't tyre "deg", but graining in the cold as the tyres were well under temp, until Melbourne we won't have a clue how they do in the heat, they might last better without the early graining, or they might fall apart after 10 laps in the heat.

Merc showed the best 15+ lap stint pace last test but who knows if they were going easy on the engines to make them last longer(lotus/red bull), should hopefully get a clearer picture in the next few days.

Alan Permane said:
"Renault had come up with some alternative engine maps to try," he said. "They talked to the FIA about it but [race director] Charlie Whiting didn't want us to use them.
"Kimi has used the new one once on an installation lap and hated it. Romain used it in the wet last week on the final day and it finished up OK. But all his running in the dry has been without it.
"It is about partial and full-throttle blowing and modifying maps to get more or less of each, but the amounts [of advantage] we're talking about are tiny. To suggest it will slow us down is nonsense."
