You say dressed up the show car, what does that mean? That the FIA physically produced a car and gave one to all of the teams to parade around?

Physically produced as in made a model in the shape of a car, yes. Not made an actual car. Most of the teams bought one for promotional work, some of them seem to have resprayed it for the launch, or used parts instead of showing their actual wings.

It's not real.

I enhanced the image a little so we can see a tad more detail on the FW22.

Very different side pod slope to the other teams so far. Also note the large Alpine like airbox.

Surely a lot of this has to be down to the budget cap. They are not going to spend extra on this sort of stuff, have sponsor demands to meet, and limited time.
The F1 launches of old are gone for the time being.

Would launches be covered under the budget cap? I'd have thought they'd count as "costs Directly Attributable to Marketing Activities" (excluded in 3.1a of the Financial regs) rather than anything that would be considered a sporting benefit.

It's not contempt.

Still seems pretty contemptuous to have your real car run the same day but do a launch with a fake one to me.

All the fancy stuff related to marketing and launch, would not be covered by budget cap no.

However, no team is going to build extra cars just for a launch.
If the car/s is/are running on track testing , that will take priority, so yes like we did many many times over the 20 odd years I was in F1 you use a dummy car for the launch, using a real car was classed as a waste of resources back then, even more so nowadays I would think with budget cap.

Just take a photo of the car at the track job done launch sorted. Easy.

There's really point in launches.

Used to take some publicity photos of cars on track, but only to be used once season was underway.

Teams often paid absolute fortune to make sure circuits were shut and locked against all public access while pre season testing went on, as not a hope you ever wanted to let photos of real race car leak before season had started.

Has been known to run cars with deliberately fake parts on, so in case other teams did get pics, it would send them off down a totally different path to where we had found gains.

When there were untold millions in Tobacco money swilling around F1 Launches were a big deal. The Spice Girls were at a McLaren launch one year, Ferrari took over the Coliseum in Rome one year I seem to remember too. Now that money train has gone up in smoke the Launches tend to be far more low key, often at the Teams base or even at the track on the morning of the first test as has happened in some years with lower end, smaller budget teams.

It's the first time since 1995 that Williams are running without the Senna "S" on car as a tribute. According to the video I saw, they want to "move on" and have agreed to fund the foundation in other ways.
