Wind tunnel testing is not the holy grail.
Can recount dozens of times cars looked amazing in the wind tunnel, but were complete animals on the track, taking months to get to grips with, and get to handle as drivers expected it to.
No it isn't, which is why I stated testing will show whose got their sums right.

I was replying to your post

The cars will have had wind tunnel testing, would they not? Thus there shouldn't really been any 'banking on' anything..

That implied you thought wind tunnel testing would easily prove what works and what does not, so teams should know that well before track testing.

I was then basically saying, all teams will to an extent or other, have their fingers crossed once testing on track starts.

The way you said "there shouldn't be any 'banking on' anything" is not really right now, as far less accurate useable info will gained from wind tunnel testing with current limitations in place, compared to previous years.

A lot more, (all be it pretty well educated) guesswork will be involved now, as to what will work, and what will not, so a lot more will be riding on the first track runs than for many years previously.

I guess you noticed the error in your post as you did cover yourself in a later post by saying, "testing will show who has got their sums right", but that was not the impression the first post gave.

As we know the results from wind tunnel testing can often be skewed and some teams got the calibration of their tunnels badly wrong in the past. However if right then the results can be accurate but on the track various other influences can be seen, such as mechanical grip for example. But teams will continue develop their cars in the wind tunnels as, after all, they would not spend the millions on them if they weren't useful...
We're talking the same language and I made no error what so ever.

Remember years ago at one team I worked at, budget restraints meant we could only get good time in a tunnel that had a max speed of 50m/s, so about 110mph.

Model looked ok, and even scaling data suggested higher speeds on track should not cause concern.

But first on track test of full car, found massive understeer in high speed corners.

Further investigation in another wind tunnel that cost five times as much to hire, but generared much higher wind speeds, showed front wing was basically generating lift at over 130mph.

Lola?

The issue with having no live timing is it'll be very difficult to work out who has it right and who has it wrong. Normally you can tell by sector times as if they're on a strong run they'll back off for sector three and post a slow time. Hopefully the likes of the race and Autosport will be paying close attention.

LOL, Lance Stroll thinks a top team may be after him:-

"Lance Stroll has said he'd have no interest in leaving Aston Martin to join a higher-placed team, if such an opportunity was to arise."

I think he is safe

Really, did you work on the FA13? My mate has one in his garage! I think it has the Hart or Mugen engine...

That was later, i started with the A11C then we brought out the FA12 that had the Porsche engine then we swapped to the FA12C with Ford DFR while i was there.
