F1 25 - path tracing!!!

They advertised reverse tracks as a big deal (lord knows why) but only have 4 tracks with reverse configs

They advertised laser scanning as a big deal (it is) but they only have 5 laser-scanned tracks

Do they deliberately make the non-ray/path traced version look crap in the comparison videos by turning all the shadows etc. off or will it actually look that hilariously bad for people not running path tracing?

The cars look like pasted on cut outs ffs

Raster takes A LOT of work and time to get looking good and even then it still can't come close to RT so in a world where every company is trying to reduce costs and most gamers have access to RT hardware now, devs have been reducing their efforts on raster over the past few years so yes, raster will look worse than what it could have if it weren't for RT/PT version, some called out this evolution a long time ago with more and more games raster methods looking awful and games starting to no longer allow RT to be turned off.

Make sure you start from the 1:50/2 minute mark to avoid the usual YouTube tosh at the start - but wow, it looks fantastic.

I really enjoyed the PS5 Pro update for the '24 game when they added RT so definitely looking forward to playing this one again now but on PC. Looks like the 9070XT can also actually manage some path tracing so keen to see how it goes!

Jesus wept, it ought to come with a warning - "If you can't run this game path traced, buy F1 2021 and get a data patch because it'll look better than the half arsed attempt we've made of this version"

It literally just looks broken, that's absolutely embarrassing

Yup it is great to see amd finally providing a RT/PT capable card especially with FSR 4 and they are now also introducing their competitor tech to nvidias ray reconstruction, good times ahead for all gamers

Been playing all these basically a year behind when they come on game pass. I found F1 24 so hard to get use to the steering so I'm hoping the controls of this feel more like 23.

I got really comfortable with that version and liked the scenario mod and could get pretty high on the the leaderboards.

As for path tracing, I'm sure it will look great but I'll probably end up turning it all off so that I can chill and play the game buttery smooth with low latency because all that matters is being quick in a racing game at the end of the day.

Downloading this now as its a free trial with game pass.
With everything on ultra path tracing 4k dlss performance, mfg x4 was getting between 40 to 50 fps. The driving with a joy pad seemed ok but it's the presentation that gets on my tittys. It's very Forza like, lots of loud "music" lots of jump cuts and some bint explaining every little detail to you. Yeah it's not for this old SIM racer. Will stick to Ams2 ACC etc

Looks like the shoehorned path tracing into this and forgot to put any actual work into non PT mode, it looks like how normal RT should look but in this it looks extra because the non PT is so badly done.

No thanks.

its trash. AMS2 and iracing both have superior f1 physics and handling
It's not designed to be a competitor to iRacing though, I'd bet that at 80% of the F1 playerbase is using a controller and is likely on console. It's meant to be a more arcade racing game, it's not meant to replicate what ACC or iRacing are doing.

I do think they should be doing more to improve how the cars feel (I actually felt like F1 2020 was the best handling model they've done since the big changes to the game engine in 2018/2019) but I imagine there are limitations to the engine considering it's essentially the same 'under the hood' since the '09 game.

It should be,

Its not even as realistic as GT7 which is more popular by the way.

Its meant to be a f1 sim. o and btw, AMS2 can easily be played on a control pad. Same with ACC infact and that is also on consoles.

Have you played ACC on a controller? Because I have - and it's a huge amount of work to get the settings dialled in so that you can actually be relatively competitive. And even then it's a huge gap to anyone on a wheel! Tyre wear has always been a problem too, it's so much more difficult to be smooth on exit with a controller and you end up with much worse rear tyres (particularly rears more than fronts) compared to anyone on a wheel.

It's not a 'pick up and play' game like the F1 games are - and I much prefer GT3 cars for racing as well. I love F1 but for actual racing, I think GT3 is the most enjoyable. Hell, I even made a post 5 years ago before they released ACC on console asking for Kunos to consider some feedback about how it could improve the game for controller users. That was after 50 hours of playtime on a controller - and I'd since put another 100 hours in, also on a controller.

I do feel like you're missing the point on what the F1 games are designed for though.

They aren't trying to appeal to the people who play iRacing or ACC. I'm sure there's a decent amount of overlap between people playing GT7 on PS5 who will probably also get the F1 games - but consider that the F1 games are on all platforms and GT7 is only on PlayStation you'll likely end up with a similar total playerbase, if not more on the F1 games. Especially now it has full crossplay!

I think the F1 games should be better - but I think it's wrong to compare them to sims.

Only way you get decent physics (and with it decent FFB) is with a completely new engine and designing the handling around a wheel and pedals.

Then once you’ve done that and have developed decent core physics you can dumb things down for the average joypad using casual in the form of driver aids and well built joypad profiles (good default sensitivity settings etc)

Have these driver aids enabled by default so the plebs can have their fun, however once you take them off you have something vaguely resembling a sim.

I’m not expecting iracing level physics or even AMS2 or the original AC… just something in between them and the current f1 games. What we currently have is dumbed down physics made for joypad users which can then be dumbed down even further with the use of driver aids…

It will never happen though, they’d need to hire new physics devs, build a new engine etc to make it drive well.

Why bother when you can just churn out the same old slop instead.

I've run a couple of demos with it fully maxed and the cars dont look like they belong on the track. There is something weird in the path tracing or HDR implementation that makes them look like they are superimposed. Had a couple of AMD driver crashes too with everything at stock settings.

i did alright on a control pad, Put in similar hours to you .
