F1 Driver Head Protection

The roll-hoop idea or reinforcing the tethers isn't going to stop what happened to Massa is it.

no but reinforcing the tethers is a good idea either way.

i'd rather something silly like a parachute attached to the tether than a rollbar on the front of the car....

Where are the wheel tethers attached? They seem to do a pretty decent job when a car crashes into a wall or something, but there was that incident in China a couple of years back when the Toro Rosso lost both wheels under braking when the suspension failed.

Was a part of his own suspension in that case iirc. That accident wouldn't happen today with how much lower the drivers are in the car anyway imo...

Yeah ... Senna did suffer an injury from his steering wheel, but the two strikes to the head that killed him were from part of his front suspension and what they think might have been a tie rod.

It doesn't really mean much to say "he got hit but didn't die" in this context, though. It really doesn't take much to turn a non-fatal accident into a funeral. If that spring from Barrichello's car had hit Massa just an inch lower and to the left, it would have been almost an identical injury to Senna's.

He was indeed a very very lucky man. That could have been tragic.

I cannot believe that anyone has managed to read this without immediately screaming "AYRTON ****ING SENNA!"

didnt senna crash not a piece of a car hitting him in the head while he was driving?
theres nothing to suggest a canopy would have saved senna never mind a roll hoop

The FIA has banned BMW Sauber's "Twin Towers". According to the governing body, the wings imede the vision of the race drivers, Jacques Villeneuve and Nick Heidfeld. The new vertical fins debuted at Magny-Cours, but now the FIA stated that it is against Article 2.3 of the Technical Regulations, which relates to features that could compromise safety.

Two thin bits in front of the driver and the FIA deem it unsafe for the drivers due to it affecting the drivers view, and they now want to put a rollcage on the cars for an accident that has a reduced chance of happening due to improved safety.

They aren't saying they ARE going to implement the exact design that has already been tested, only that some kind of added driver protection is likely to happen.

We don't know the final design yet. I should imagine anything implemented will have a minimal impact on driver visibility.

I'm sick & tired of people interfering with other peoples pleasure, Why don't they just wrap the driver & car in bubble wrap. ******** *******.

I'm sure you're old enough to remember the time when an F1 driver snuffed it at every other race :p It's not very pleasurable seeing people die. That said, it's going to be hard to implement this - I think solving the problem rather than the symptoms would be more useful.

Yep resolving the problem would be better as said. The drivers have much improved head protection already - just look at the BMW there from only a few years ago to see the difference.
