F1 Jake plugging the ipad?!

Nothing much really, besides the marketing and the rivers of BS that come with the products.

That's just good marketing for you, what apple do best to be fair. They have to sell them, and that's exactly what they do, very well. Who'd have thought putting an 'i' in front of the word phone would have been such a great marketing ploy! It seems stupid, it probably is at face value, but you can't doubt they still sell a shedload of products. If they marketed them like other similar products on the market, I can assure you they would not be anywhere near as popular.

Apple do market very well, no doubt about that.

As with anything, people who can see through such marketing ploys will always voice discontent (me being one of them). :p

That said, I'm not an Apple hater by any means, if and when they release something that does something I need better than another option, I'll buy it, no questions asked.

Yup, they make every single thing they do out to be some massive innovation nomatter if its been done before or not.

That's not evidence I'm afraid. There's too many other people using them without issues, so applelyness aside for a sec, it's probably a problem specific to that, or a small number, of units, or relating to the conditions. No product released is without fault, as much as we'd like to think some are perfect.

If it does relate to the conditions though then its possible that hot weather is a no usage scenario for it. Too early to tell if its a faulty ipad or something that we could see more of as we go into the hotter months.

Sadly, all your generic non-tech minded women and Apple fanboys listen to it, and they sell like hotcakes. It's a good laugh :D

Again, they're a business, that's why they're successful at what they do. I don't think we're partial to the hype as much as some others, but that's not a reason to dislike the company. Heck, I wish I was selling that many units at that price. An example of marketing at it's best.

Nothing much really, besides the marketing and the rivers of BS that come with the products. Funny thing is i'll probably have an iphone tomorrow as my brothers contract comes up for renewal and he went ahead and bought some new nokia phone instead of waiting till his contract ended. My second iphone at that, got my first one (the original) for £125.

I thought the iphone was a good product despite them taking ages over including mms and copy\paste, then when they did incorperate them it was some massive anouncement with hype for something that should have been in there on day one.

The ipad to me just seems like a massive gimmicky product (with the usual bs marketing and hype) thats going to drop off fast. Ive already seen a review where the guy that bought it is already bored of it after 50 or so hours.

I agree to be honest, they are adding things that should have been there from the start. Could just of been Jobs wanting to do it better and taking a while to work out what "better" is, and to be fair to Apple, they have made C&P pretty slick.

I wish they'd add wireless syncing tho, my biggest bug bear that is.

Personally the iPad is here to stay, I will at some point (not in the near future tho!) be getting one but if thats in the next year or two is hard to say.

And you think plastic would radiate heat better?

To be fair, none of us designed it, so we can't make any assumptions that one would be better than the other, despite the obvious answer that metal conducts heat better. If plastic, they may be able to incorporate a more delicate and efficient cooling solution, who knows, I'm not a designer of such things. If that's actually your job, fair enough. That goes for both of you.

He says why he uses it in his blog. No big deal what so ever it works for him and does what it needs. I think it looks a lot better and modern than having a clipboard all the time.

And you think plastic would radiate heat better?

Show me where i said that. Netbooks may be made using a plastic shell but they do have integrated fan assisted cooling. Looks like apple are relying solely on the aluminium shell to dissapate the heat.

Well with any luck, the demand created for a better/cheaper alternative may produce a worthy competitor to consider instead, I think the wheels are already in motion for almost all of the major manufacturers. The simple feature omissions shouldn't be as big an issue for companies not bound by certain policies and design practices such as the iphone os and what it includes (and indeed doesn't). Android looks like a great alternative.

Problem is Apple offers more than just a "phone".

The ability to sync all my important data between limitless machines is invaluable and sadly something no other phone will do [effortlessly - possible but a pain in the backside!]

So personally, im not going anywhere! So when apple does finally do something I want it is a small victory :p

All about priorities ;)

Well this is what I was saying before. I couldn't give a crap if it syncs to my other apple devices, partly as I have no apple pcs (!) but even it was, I don't generate enough data to worry about that. I simply use synctoy between my netbook, and two PCs, and could even use it with my phones storage if I needed to. It's set up to do a one click sync, which is neat. All my mail is on other servers accessible by web, so it's just a case of adding the account to a device and allowing it to change/delete on the server, that way it's all in sync.

If it's a dealbreaker for you, so be it.

Aha, the voice of reason ;)

Jake's blog check out 4' 33" for those of you really interested in why he uses the iPad.

I can see why he thinks it's better than a BlackBerry and a clipboard. Battery life is an issue though as it's left on the table by the time the forum is on.

I do keep expecting him to drop it as he dashes around the pit lane. I wonder if he's got a spare?

P

I personally think it is revolutionary, but that's just me, I've dreamed of the day we could have touch panel devices that you carry around and use with complete ease, I've never liked laptops for 'what I use them for', I've always found them cumbersome, heavy, poor battery life and often bloated with software that I don't use or need, and also unintuitive interface, the idea of just having a glass panel sitting beside me or on the coffee table that I can just pick up and 'touch' and I'm surfing the net instantly, checking emails, playing games, reading books etc is very very appealing to me, it makes accessing media a lot more ergonomic for me.

I can't wait until these types of devices really take off to the extent where everyone has one or two lying around the house, I think they will really revolutionise how me interact with digital media, I imagine in the future it being the norm using one of these devices at kids bedtimes to read interactive story books, children using them for educational purposes etc.

Emails, contacts, calendar, alarms, bookmarks, notes and also the ability to ping it when its disappeared I find mighty useful :p

I don't have to interfere at all, syncs on change, set and forget is the way forward TBH. If your solution is 'neat', Apple's solution is far 'neater'

Hmm, do you think the iPod Touch is revolutionary too?

A spare? Unlikely at that price! I watched the vid, I saw nothing amazing about it, more of a gimmick in my opinion. Certainly everything he showed us could have been written down on his clipboard, which would be easier and quicker to take additional notes on. The only benefit I see is being able to access twitter on the move, but I already said in this thread that I don't really care about hearing what tweets he's had, the presenting was fine before that, and folk like Martin Brundle always asked the questions that I wanted any answers to. Obviously Jake thinks it's useful, so fair play, but not for me, and I don't think it adds anything to coverage at least, though it might make his job easier in some respects, but irritating in others.
