Oh indeed, the days when cars couldn't get close to each other due to the dirty air as well - isn't quite so bad on that front now which was part of what the rule changes were trying to help as well (plus DRS helps with that too).
Those winglets shouldn't be there, the rules were designed to get rid of them.
But its the way the rules are written. I can't remember the specifics but its something like winglets not being allowed anywhere for a certain distance ahead of the rear wheel center line. However with the cars getting longer with big fuel tanks and the teams nudging the leading edge of the sidepods forward they are able to get winglets in a gap ahead of the edge of the rules, but behind the front of the side pod.
McLaren did made a shorter wheelbase car part way through 1996 (off the top of my head it was introduced in time for Monaco).
Edit: But that's an enormous change mid-season now, as it will completely change the flow to the back of the car, so I assume this is with a view to next year's car. That's a heck of a risk if the aim is to challenge this year.
Back in the mid 90's the front and back of the car were seen more individually, so the aerodynamic pitfalls weren't as big. Now everything from the nose backwards is about how to shape the air towards the back of the car.
Another article about Red Bull, this time their skinny rear wing at Spa and how to keep the car balanced as they still had a normal front wing - http://www.f1technical.net/development/424
Afternoon guys, recently started working at McLaren, Always followed F1 but now being around the place on a daily basis I feel like I would like to know more about the technical side of the car. The previous posts are great for specific areas, does anyone have a good "overview" article about the entire car?
I am a AV technical support engineer, so run events that they need screens, mics, projections, etc etc great fun and only getting busier and more interesting.
