F1 Testing 2012 - Week 1, Jerez

No different to last year and McLaren talking about how they are sure the car is fast but need to unlock it's potential. The question is, can Ferrari unlock it?

I was expecting to a time in the 1.17s around this test track for someone.

They probably will if they take the fuel out :)

Alonso - a 9 lap stint with the 1.18.877 done on the 3rd lap

Looks like either the slow times in earlier testing were because either A) Massa is useless, B) Alonso could make a milk float turn competetive times, or C) They're showboating to get Montezemolo and the Italian press off their back.

I'm going for all three personally :)

Or the car has totally changed in those 3 days just maybe, don't think Massa even used soft tyres either which Alonso is setting his best times on.

It's that they are struggling to make the car handle consistently that's the most worrying.

Exactly. Headline times are not so important on Day4 of the first week of testing.

What is important is that things go according to plan and that what they are seeing in simulations, match up to what is going on the track.

Basically, you want things to be predictable and "smooth", during testing.

Sure, Alonso can make the car go fast, but how would he square up in a long distance race against an RBR, considering that the RBR is consistently able to knock out fast times, with no reliability issues. For me, at this point RBR have had the most smoothest testing schedule of any team, especially with what Webber did on Day1 and Day2 - he was fast, consistent and his machine was reliable. At present, no other team can boast this.

Indeed. And McLaren got walloped by RBR.

In 2012, given that RBR are so damn good, you cannot afford to give them this sort of advantage. You have to goto first day of testing, all guns blazing. RBR do not need other teams to have "problems" to win.

In saying all this, these are early days yet, so things can change. So lets just bear this in mind.

Apart from Vettel only doing 2 laps so far today :p

RBR could probably not turn up to the remaining tests and then turn up on Race1 and be fastest.

Perhaps I am the only one thinking this, but other teams needs to beat RBR. We do not want to see RBR dominate as they have for the last 2 years. It isn't good enough that Ferrari or McLaren have the 2nd or 3rd best car. I want to see RBR and Vettel playing catch up for once.

Their electrical problem today doesn't change the likelihood that they probably will enter Race1 with the best car.

We need Ferrari and McLaren to have smooth running, in order to stand a chance of beating RBR, lest we have another season of Vettel winning everything.

At worst it's only for another year or two before the major rule change. Then things will be shaken up again.

I dont pay much attention to the pre-season testing or indeed the practice seasons before a GP, we all know that the teams sandbag on purpose to stop rivals from getting a true idea of performance, then when its time for "pointy finger man" to pull out a fast one he always seems to come up trumps.

Still no proper laps from Vettel. Senna is doing well with 96 laps completed this morning!

Oh god here we go AGAIN....

:D

Here comes the 35 page argument on sandbagging.

I don't come around these parts much, so must have missed that thread.

Ok then, its my personal opinion that they hold a bit back instead of "we all know".

Oh yeah!

It'll be just like that time (at F1-Camp) that everybody was sandbagging and Brawn went running with an underweight car on fumes in a last ditch effort to try and entice some sponsors onboard...

:p

I'm back from my week of media isolation in an non-internet zone... also known as Cornwall!

What did I miss? The times are always misleading, but first impressions = McLaren :(

Anything exciting going on that I missed, or just the usual testing talk of sandbagging and show boating and usual completely uninformative times :p?

The general consensus among the internet seems to be that RBR are unbeatable this year based on 4 days of testing times with literally no info on the degree of sandbagging.
