F1 Testing 2014: Week 3 Bahrain

I would absolutely love it if Caterham wins a couple even if it is due to unreliability of others !

And by "wins" we mean "scores a point".

Both the new teams have had 13th place finishes; it's only the bulletproof reliability of the last few years that has stopped them scoring already. I wouldn't be surprised (or upset) if they both got off the mark this year. My most fervent hope is that they do it in the first couple of races while Red Bull are still getting double-DNFs. The comedy value of RBR being behind Caterham and Marussia in the WCC cannot be overestimated.

Gary Anderson:

"When the team that has won, and more or less dominated, both the drivers' and constructors' championships for the past four years can screw up as it has, it just goes to show how luck still plays a big part in Formula 1."

Er no, I'd say that Red Bull maybe got slightly arrogant and just didn't work hard enough on their 2014 car?

Saying that RB have had bad luck with the way their 2014 car has initially turned out is the same as saying Williams have lucked into a good car this year... it's neither.

Red Bull simply didn't work hard enough whilst coasting to victory after victory in 2013 and lapping Champagne up... all whilst Williams were working their socks off back in Grove on their 2014 car.

Yes, there's an element of luck in someways but the vast majority of it comes down to hard work!

Whilst I doubt RB have had their feet up smoking cigars all winter, part of me does agree with that. Ted also said something similar in one of the notebooks, whilst RB were trouncing everybody in 2013 and continuously still bringing updates to the car, did they not think there may have been a reason why they were sailing off with both titles? i.e. other teams were much more focused on 2014 from a very early stage.

Well, I don't know why Red Bull are doing so badly - although it seems that Renault have screwed up as much as Red Bull themselves - but if we're to call a host of design failures "luck" doesn't that make it a rather meaningless concept? Red Bull are doing badly because they've failed on the design front not because of some freak incident.

What a load of rubbish. He shows a total ignorance of how things are developed and why they go the way they do.

OUCH!!! comes to mind.

The writer is a little egotistical if you ask me

Definitely egotistical and is too heavy handed in his criticism.

But he's not unfounded in his claims. The Head of Renault PU development at the tests admitted that they were behind schedule and is mainly due to software gremlins. Saying things like 'limp home' mode and 'fail safe' programs either didn't exist yet or were very immature in their development, even for relatively minor issues these then become major problems for the teams.

I can sort of see where Anderson is coming from. Newey has designed a car he's convinced will be fast, but it's based on the assumption that Renault will deliver a PU that will work within the confines of the (tight) space provided.

Arrogant to be sure, but Renault will have the problems fixed at some point during the season where the (possibly) superior packaging (may) show benefits. No one could have imagined Renault would such a huge balls-up of it, after all.

Arrogance or a gamble too far?
