F1 Testing 2015: Week 1 Jerez

Hence I think Honda only going with McLaren in the first year is a bad decision. They should have got at least one other team on board.

I said ages ago they should have gone to Caterham and said, we'll give you 10mil now and free engines next year. Would have kept Caterham in business most likely and secured them a season of significantly more data input. Caterham did more running than RBR because unlike a top team they had a conservative high cooling not hugely fast but somewhat reliable car, perfect for getting miles on the road and with zero chance of ever being actually competitive with a bigger team.

Could be the difference between having a less embarrassing year this year and being competitive maybe even as early as 2016 rather than 1-2 years later. Coming into the new engine regs a year behind everyone and with less teams than everyone else is just ridiculous.

Oooosshh

Rosberg (Mercedes) 26
Ricciardo (Red Bull) 16
Ericsson (Sauber) 15
Sainz (Toro Rosso) 14
Vettel (Ferrari) 9
Alonso (McLaren) 1

Autosport:
09:58 As a rough indication of how much progress has been made with these new generation of F1 cars and power units, Nico Rosberg's fastest time this morning is four seconds faster than the quickest overall on day one at Jerez last year.

Meaningless I suppose, but still interesting to note.

Also
09:45 The McLaren is back in the pits. EDD STRAW reports that it looked and sounded "very stuttery" both in the pits and out on track as Alonso logged that first installation lap of the test.

The time at the end of the 3rd test will be a benchmark of the progression that's been made over the year.

Those red wing mirrors on the McLaren are awful.

yup, whoever the designer was that thought the red streak should include the wing mirrors should be fired, looks completely ridiculous.

That's misfiring badly

yup, most cars sounded pretty bad last year the first few days. Maybe completely misremembering this but Merc sounded the best but still dodgy for a few days then sounded pretty smooth after. Renault sounded like it was dying, misfiring and just awful throughout the first test, improved test to test significantly. Ferrari sounded awful to start with, maybe less like dying but more misfiring and just not right than even the Renault did. I think the Ferrari seemed to improve pretty quickly but still had that weird turbo/hoover noise even the rest of it sounded smoother/healthier.

Not surprising to hear the Honda sound very very wrong to start with.
