F1 Testing 2017: Week 1 Barcelona (27th - 2nd)

That picture of the Merc is great, it makes the mini shark fin look a little transparent with the reflection of the nearside tire.

EDIT:- also not surprising on crowds, after the last two preseason tests for Mclaren the fans know turning up on the first couple days to see Alonso just isn't worth it :p

Day 2, MCL32 lap 1, crawling back in to the pits.....a massive part of me is hoping that McLaren are trolling us but I fear that isn't the case.

Not even an Alonso fan but it would be a crying shame if his career ends like this.

Yup, more importantly, well I'll quote it..

Hamilton described Pirelli's 2017 tyres as "rock hard" yesterday and his lap times in this stint are certainly bearing that out.

After opening up with that 1:21.7, 10 laps later he was still in the 1:22s with his only couple of laps, the 14th and 15th of this stint, dropping into the 1:23s.

I take that to mean all the first 13 laps were sub 1:23, and depending on what the rest of the laps were, those two slower laps could have been deg or just slightly slower laps. Either way that is say 1.5seconds deg over 14 laps. Though it also makes me think, if that is 'stint' pace at 1:21, the qualifying pace will be 3-5 seconds faster than that :o

Anderson is a complete and utter idiot for thinking Williams had 17seconds of tire deg in a 16 lap stint... I can't take anything he says seriously as he frequently says such utterly stupid things like that.

I'd put money on the fact that Massa just did randomly fast laps, then did a slow last lap followed by slow inlap, then Anderson decided that slow lap was the fastest he could do and jumped to a completely ridiculous conclusion from it.

Another quote from Hamilton from yesterday regarding the tyres

"And then also right now the tyres are so hard that they don't drop of, they keep going and going and going and going. So most likely we're going to be doing a lot more one-stoppers and, since there's not degradation - less mistakes, less overtaking."

The 17 seconds of tyre deg thing was accounting for fuel use, so not that stupid

No, it really really was. Over 16 laps or something you'd end up what, 1 second or so faster total... to see 17 seconds of deg that means he was going 15+ seconds slower by the end of a 16 lap stint, meaning he just didn't get he was doing slow laps at the end of the stint and jumped to massive tire deg.

Fuel over an entire race moves the cars to about 3 seconds faster at the end than the beginning. Hamilton lost 1.5 seconds(maybe) over the same period as the Williams, but he came up with 17 seconds of tire deg... that is beyond stupid.

As for Mclaren, 3rd power unit already, two changes during testing which takes the car out for hours of potential track time.... same old.

I'd hate to be the mechanics in that McLaren garage. ANOTHER engine change while all the other teams are doing stints, deg testing and adding new bits of aero. Lets hope they get it sorted and are able to get some decent mileage on the car.

It's okay though, that other team with a Honda is getting good laps in.... oh.

Seriously 3 years, a couple of chances to give financial support to another team and they still haven't got that Honda in another car... diots.

I hadn't been reading all the stuff, did they say what the problem with the Renault car was? Seems it got out on track right before the flag to end the morning session though.

Renault was busy fitting new parts delivered overnight I believe.

Nice image showing the similarities between Merc and TR:

Damn it, not at all used to the names yet. When I see them saying Bottas is out again my brain thinks Williams, not Merc.

Pretty dire of WIlliams to not have spares available to get the car out this afternoon, embarrassing really. More Smedley planning magic. The Stroll 'crash' was just a spin out across gravel. So some damage to the floor maybe, gravel damage, shouldn't be an awful lot. Not having enough spares to fix that kind of thing is ridiculous.

I'm assuming those Merc mirrors are a special testing design with sensor/camera in to observe the front tyres/wing?
Apparently a sponsor deal with Quallcomm. They're infrared cameras for monitoring front tyre temps :)
