yes I know, but I've watched F1 avidly since about 1978 and I can't remember overtaking ever being that common place.
I don't think anyone is saying that they want overtaking every single lap. What we are arguing is about the distance between the car behind and the car in front.
In general, this is what creates the excitement for the viewing public and the driver.
Even if you realistically can't get past the car in front, if you are only a few inches away from the bumper of the car in front, it looks very exciting.
Look up Mansell VS Senna at Monaco 1992. This explains what I mean very well. Mansell has no chance of getting past Senna. However, at times, both cars are almost touching.
This creates excitement.

When I was watching that race live, my heart was pounding as we all knew, with Mansell, anything is possible, but we also knew that overtaking at Monaco with those wide cars is near impossible.
