F15 X5 Replacement

The 2 easiest 'right in front of you' options are always the best :D

An F15 X5 40D does everything that anyone needs, so just stick with that. Or up your budget and get an M50d, just because that engine is hilariously good.

Our old 2016 M50d was actually better on fuel than the current 2018 40d................
I think you could be right, but I enjoy the comfort of owning a car in warranty (non 3rd party).

I think you’ve already got the best car for the job tbh. Don’t see what changing to a Cayenne gets you apart from even bigger servicing & warranty requirements and relatively shonky ICE. Keep the X5 another couple years until your budget gets a G05 X5.

Spend more and get a Tesla Model X, it'll at least have some decent residuals over a diesel in 3-4 years. Or keep what you have and pay the warranty if you are that paranoid about it breaking.

Now this is the motors I came here for!

Op, triple your budget and get a £90k electric car.

Depends on how you shop, I look at TCO for the period I want to keep it. So the initial purchase price might go up, but the total cost to have it for 2, 3, 4, 5 years maybe be the same or less.

Obviously if you are strapped for cash, can't get the finance, don't want to take the finance then that is understandable, but would it bit be totally ignorant to not make the suggestion as an alternate option. Or do you think having more options and ideas is a bad thing? :)

I think someone saying they have a budget of £30k and someone recommending a car with the cheapest second hand model being 60% higher (£48k for those can't be bothered to do the maths) is exactly what the Motors section in OCUK is expected to do.

Says the guy recommending the £50k+ car to the guy with the 30k budget? :D

Yes, as explained I based it on TCO which any one with any financial sense does, if they can afford to release the capital, get the finance etc. and at the end they've spent the same or less, what difference does it make? As you said if they can 'afford' £30k they aren't strapped for cash...

Refrain from offering alternatives and or other options, I must remember that in future. We could call it TheFoxWay™ ;)

Go on then, entertain us, what TCO did you do? What TCO said someone should spend 60% more to save money in the long run? :p

The challenge with this request is he probably has the best car for requirements and the budget isn’t much different to car they are trying to get out of.

What do you find funny exactly? With the :p on every post? Is there something you don't understand you'd like help with but are afraid to ask?

TCO = Total Cost of Ownership. If the OP wanted to keep a car say 4 years (we don't know how long) you add up the cost of the insurance, fuel, depreciation (at point of selling) maintenance, warranty cover, finance interest payments (if applicable), opportunity cost if you are getting fancy etc. The you work out the total spend in that time, and you have the TCO figure, it's all best guess though since neither one of us can predict the future.

Anything you like some help with understanding? :)
