Evening,

I've been looking to find a replacement for the Lupo. This evening on the way home from work I thought i'd pop in to the Skoda garage to see if they had any Fabia vRSs they did in red. Unfortunately they had sold it, but the guy said I was welcome to have a look round it, so I did.

It was a 06 vRS with 26,000 miles on the clock, it had black leather seats and the interior was generally in good condition. But it didn't have Xenon lights. However saying that, they are optional extras. They had sold it for £6999.

The road tax on the vRS can range from £110 - £125 depending on the year and the road tax for the Lupo is £175.00 a year with it being a 51 plate.

Do you think a vRS would be a good move, or can you think of a different option?

Well, i fancied a change from petrol, a torquey turbo diesel. It has to be cheap to run/maintain.

I've always liked the vRS, i thought that they are under-rated and they are easily tuneable. With a custom re-map they can fetch high torque figures

I've had a vRS and I can say they are a good car. For the price you get really solid performance. However saying that, you soon get used to what it can do and then the appeal of the car wears off in my opinion. They look awful as well but that is a subjective opinion. If you want to go fast for a cheap price then definitely consider it. It will probably last ages as well. However you could also look at a leon FR with the TDi engine in it. In my opinion it looks a lot better and has almost the same performance. At the end of the day I would have thought people buy the vRS for the price/performance ratio. If you have the money and I was in your position, I would get something that is easier on the eyes.

What do you want out of the car? I doubt the VRS will give you the same satisfaction as the GTI does when driving for fun

How miles do you do a year? Are you buying it because you need a diesel or because you think the vRS is fast?

For the same money you'll get a much much faster petrol hatch.

Ideally the torque from it, i know that there will be better cars that provide much more power etc, etc, but it'll be cheaper to insure than the GTI and would probably get me more than 220 miles from a tank of fuel, but saying that the GTI only has a 30L petrol tank.

As much as i love driving my Lupo, i just feel that i'm wanting something different, a turbo diesel.

The Polo GTs have the same 1.9 PD130 engine and is essentially the same car but with a VW badge, and the badge doesn't bother me that much in this case.

I don't do that many miles probably 15,000 a year maybe less.

You realise all this massive torque is only developed at the flywheel, right? You've got to get it to the wheels before it does anything, and a diesel doesn't rev anywhere near as high as a petrol car so the true torque @ wheels between them both is similar?

If you really want a small diesel hatchback I would try and find a Ibiza Cupra diesel I would rather have one of these over a vRS the engine has a slighly bigger turbo so 160bhp and they are more prepared if you want to remap it with a FMIC and 4 pot AP brakes. Before making the switch I would take a Clio 182/Mini JCW out if it is a small car you are after as I think these would be your best bet as an upgrade from a Lupo GTI. You would get a very good 182 for less than the vRS was sold for and 182 driving sensibly can get 40mpg+

going to be selling my VRS soon, its a decent car and good on fuel however its not really my style (not a fan of newer cars but had to give it ago)

Cant really fault it since i have owned it.

Why not a turbo petrol? Cupra-R springs to mind

Hmm, not really keen on the LCRs.

Just fancy a change, and to be honest, the diesels are appealing to me at the moment, purely because they are cheap and with a custom map they can get high torque figures, i can accept that they would be in no way faster than its petrol rival.

Okay if not a vRS what would be a good contender for a TD?

I'd like to get a JCW eventually, I haven't really been looking into a 182, but i'm 23 I live outside Bradford (Keighley), I work in Bradford, although its parked in a secure car park at work, I have 3 years No Claim Bonuses the insurance is going to be expensive. At the moment I am paying £800 on the GTI with modifications declared.

How is a £7000 old shape Fabia cheap?

Surely one of the clio cups over the fabia VRS at this price?

In fact i wouldn't dream of spending 7k on a small hatchback, clio included.

Indeed.
Torque and engine rpm (there is a constant in there somewhere) equals power.

Lots of torque, low engine rpm (diesel) means average power.

I imagine the Fabia VRS is the best car in the world to young people who want a sporty car and mpg, but are a bit thick:p Hence the high price tag.
