Facebook a curse not a blessing?

I kind of agree, there are a lot of parts of facebook that have become like ghettos, like fan pages and all those "x is murdering scum" pages full of hate and stupidity.

There's someone I know who has new "going out" photos up almost every day, just seems strange to me that people would take so many photos all the time, I couldn't be chewed. I also get a bit bored of attention whores and people who use "txt spk" in their status messages etc.

Aye, along with mobile phones, Facebook's a big reason for the deterioration of the English language.

I've also noticed what you're saying about photos. It's sometimes really quite odd; I remember going through a Jap tourist phase myself years ago, I guess this is what people who have a new camera phone do? :/ And with them uploading them rather than printing/developing I guess they have as much space as a memory card.

Playing Devil's advocate here. Surely you can't sack someone because of what they have said outside work? Does this mean if I say my boss is a **** and ******* hate him the gay *****!"%&*&* and gets it on tape it is grounds to fire me? I'd doubt it.

The boss has gone onto a work collegues site and would presumably have to accept whats thrown on there, if he/she is senstive why go on there in the first place other than to snoop?

Its a dodgy area and I dont accept anyone other than loose friends on there, family & everyone from work are excluded even the odd good friend.

The trouble is these days (see what I've said above) everybody accepts each other. Even after meeting say for five minutes on a night out (seriously?). It's not quite as private as a discussion between a few people. Usually, well over a hundred and fifty could immediately see it. Then if comments are thrown in, several hundred more. That makes it akin to publically airing your point of view. Which if nasty, slanderous, defaming of any characters etc. etc...........

I don't think you can say language is getting worse, It is simply evolving. Given the internets growth surely this was going to have some affect on language.

It might make people less intelligent regarding language (reading and writing skills) perhaps.

But isn't there a few "txt" words in the dictionary now?

It's the middle point which is most apparent and what annoys me the most.

I think it's fine to use those abbreviations occasionally or where needs must, say if running out of space on a text message. But it's so common now through laziness. It's easier to type that way. And the language deteriorates afterwards through to where such langauge is undesirable. Like for example school essays.

There are companies now that make you sign a document stating that you will not put anything onto facebook that is damaging to the companies reputation or to the employees of the company otherwise you will face disaplinary action. I know wetherspoons do.

People seem to go out only to take pictures.

IT'S SO ******* ANNOYING.

Everywhere you go on a night out you get stupid tarts taking pictures for Facebook. Or stupid kids on trains pretending to pole dance on the hand rails. **** OFF

"mate that HAS to go on facebook innit".

:(

If you're on probation you can be sacked for pretty much any reason they care to give, without any real hope of recourse.

Fair enough.

To be fair some people do use ridiculous methods of shortening txt, some are pointless as well, some have the same amount of letters or even more than the actual correct spelling.

I think I'm part of the last few school years to have any sort of good writing and grammar education :)

But language will evolve to incorporate internet language

I don't subscribe to the idea that txt spk is the evolution of the English language, most people can't even understand it, not to mention that there is no need for it whatsoever.

The problem with the version of our language the internet is creating is we now have a written dialect and no reference to accent or localised conditions. Those two things are very important in the formation of our understanding of the interactions that take place between people.

Quite recently actually, my friend notified me of some photos of my 'girlfriend' at the time, nice and cosy with another dude that she had hidden from me, but forgot to hide from my mates. Noob

I might have let slip once that someone needed anger management help. Coincidentally the last three years she has been nothing but angry. Bless you spacebook.

If you hate facebook, don't use it? If you hate it(belive its a curse) and use it, then you are wierd.

I like facebook due to how it keeps people networked. I speak to people who I would have lost contact with quite easily and it is enjoyable speaking to them. I can imagine that as I begin to leave university life, it will become less useful, but will still keep my account.

My future employers will have no access to my account and only friends are able to see photos, my wall and updates. Simple.

A massive curse. Apart from people becoming socially lazy it's deffo done more harm than good. I don't know anybody who's found all their old school friends actually done anything with them now that they're in "permanent contact".

I think a lot of people arent actually interested in making contact with old school 'friends'. I think quite a lot of it is just curiosity about what they 'turned' out like, what they made (or most often) didnt make of themselves.

Its kind of the modern replacement for the school reunion, where you can go and gloat at people you knew at school.

Personally I dont use social networking sites, cant really see the point of them. The people I actually want to keep in contact with in life I have kept in contact with. Chances are if I lost contact with you, its because I didnt want to maintain contact in the first place :)

I know quite a lot of people who quite literally live their lives via social networking sites, constantly with them open on their PCs, making sure they check it every day and post every day, updating their 'moods' and informing everyone what packet of crisps they had today and so on. Some people adore social networking sites, and I guess they get a lot out of them someway. Just not really my cup of tea.
