Facebook lets beheading clips return to social network

I have a 13 year old son and I have only just allowed him use of Facebook. I didn't really want to as I know what Facebook can be like with graphic material and cyber bullying, but most of his friends are on it and using it. I have made sure that I have full access to his account and set up his security settings as far as it will let me. The problem I find is that Facebook make no attempts to stop this graphic and violent material on the site. Someone comments on a video that it should be removed or it is disgusting, then it gets spread around even more to peoples newsfeeds. Although I find that people have the ability to watch or not to watch, but seriously... who in thier right mind would want to view sick videos like that, especially a 13 year old? Surely there are other sites which can offer that stuff. If Facebook want to allow it on the site, then they should have tighter restrictions and options to change settings for anyone under 18. It is not just the responsibility of the parent to watch what their child is viewing, but also the responsibility of Facebook to stop this graphic material.

I came off Facebook 6 months ago after tiring of seeing photographs and links to dogs being mauled/killed, a video of a fatal motorcycle accident and a video which had been shared of a child-minder repeatedly slapping a 6 month old baby around the head.

My 14 year old niece told us last week, completely unfazed, how she had watched one of the beheading videos, yet in the next breath was outraged at a photograph of a friend's sister showing a little boobage on a photo.

It would be interesting to read some research on as to if being desensitised to violence (via digital viewing) has a correlation with increased violence.

I'll have to do some reading, but if I had to guess - I'd say that in people who already have a desire, it may incite them further - for some it may reduce the chance (putting them off violence) & for the majority it would make no difference.

Viewing real life violence & knowing people who get killed/die on a regular basis has been linked to reducing the "value of life index" which in small part helps explain the horrendous abuses we see in Africa.

If a world where life is cheap, it's less of a social barrier to kill another human being.

This says more about your "friends" than Facebook, i don't get stuff like that. But then again they probably aren't even your friends and you've just accepted them for no reason.

But no ( . ) ( . )'s are allowed to be shown.

To be honest that is spot on what you've said. You can show someone being murdered, but not boobs? Think they have got themselves all mixed up.

I see kids 8 years old talking about facebook and they are on it for hours, talking to friends etc. It's not hard to lie about your age.

I don't care on my age, a beheading is something I never want to see.

Nice assumption.

If someone I knew commented on the content, favourably or not, the content then comes up on your 'live feed'.
That's how it works.

How is it an assumption, you dont get it, unless you like a page of a "friend" likes it, comments on it etc.
How has favourably or not got anything to do with it.

Lol, the world.

Fine to watch someone be beheaded but as soon as a female nipple finds its way on facebook that's it, picture deleted.

I despair at the human race sometimes

That's an assumption.

If they comment on a page saying either ''That's great'' or That's bad'', it comes up on the live feed.

I don't believe the people I accepted as friends because I knew them actually liked the pages or shared the videos, merely commenting on them is enough.

It has nothing to do with the friends that people have, well it might in some cases, but I have certainly removed people for posting or commenting on graphic material as I don't want to see it.

A Friend comments on a video that it should be removed or it is disgusting, then it gets spread around even more to peoples newsfeeds.

I think people don't realise that even commenting on a video will spread it around like wild fire!

I have to agree if you want to see this sort of stuff then there are sites for that - for the mainstream Facebook site to show it is frankly disgusting. For the odd occasion I do log into that to get updates on peoples cats etc I don't want this sort of stuff in my newsfeed.

It would be like putting it on the news after the watershed - kids would still see it and I'm sure 99% of the viewers would not want to see that sort of thing

Come on guys please..do you think the islamic terrorists can learn their trade with out video?

Welcome to social medium and dumb people. You comment on it, it spreads. Don't like it, click the arrow and mark as spam or one of the other options.

Its still your friends not facebook.

e!

It has everything to do with friends, if you don't have such friends you wont see it.
Facebook doesn't suggest such videos, the only way to see them is search for them, like pages that show such stuff, or have "friends" which like/comment on it.

So yes it has everything to do with friends.
