I've never bothered to join Facebook but am considering it because I often hear about all these groups that are selling things that are difficult to get hold of through ebay or gumtree. In my case, I'm particularly talking about drums, as some of the things I want are only available from the US. I believe there are specific UK groups on Facebook that sell these things, so it would make life a lot easier, and probably prices a lot better. I also think it might be a good platform for me to sell myself for work as a musician.

My concern is myself being so public. It's not that I have anyone to hide from, but sometimes you just don't want old friends or acquaintances seeing you on Facebook or getting in touch.

What I mean is, can you be on Facebook with a username, the same as on any internet forum such as OCuK, or does everyone see your real name?

Do you mean fake 'real' name when you sign up, as opposed to choosing a username after you've registered with your real name?
Keep it a “real” name, ie John Doe or whatever, something blatently fake like a forum username would potentially get shutdown.

Ah ok, I get it. So at the point of registering, when it asks me for my name, give a fake one as there's no usernames as such on there.

Wouldn’t signing up with a fake name sort of hinder your chances of buying stuff?

If I posted to someone that I wanted to buy their item, is there like a PM system on Facebook to continue speaking to that person at which point I'd give my real name?

Facebook Messengers allows you to have private chats with people, so you could give your real name there and explain why you haven’t used your real name as otherwise people might worry it’s a scam or something.

Thanks. Typing 'Facebook fake names' into google, I see that fake names are basically not allowed and that it's up to the user to hope they don't get flagged and banned. Hmm, maybe I should just go ahead and use my real name. I wonder if most others on here who use Facebook use their real names or fake names?

But I'm not looking for conversation and general socialising on there, that doesn't interest me, well, unless it's a specific forum about music and drums. Really just considering it as a medium to possibly buy and sell things.
