Facebook on Android just eats your battery

Thanks for the Metal recommends chaps, installed it last night and it's very good and doesn't zap the hell out of my battery.

It's the recent app update, looks like it's affected a lot of users.

I too shall try out this Metal in replacement for the app.

The app frankly is **** - it's just got more bloated over the years in terms of sizing. It took the facebook developers an absolute age to give it the feature of allowing it to be moved onto external storage - and even then the internal size is still a whopper.

It's CPU and Memory consumption are very heavy handed - i appreciate some people want news feeds loading extra quick, but i'd rather my phone run smoother/lighter and have to load the news feed every time i load the app.

I don't like Metal, slow and clunky.

The official app has used 1% of my battery today so hardly bad, perhaps try opting into the beta program to see if there is an issue with the latest release.

Fancy seeing this today! my battery life has been poor the past few days. Facebook was using a large % of it, especially as I hadn't used it that much. Yesterday, I deleted the app (which just took it back to a really old version) and then updated it and signed in and it's been fine today. It hasn't even appeared under that battery stats

So I've even tried setting Facebook so it can't do anything without a wifi connection, and it still eats up my battery. Today, with me having hardly used my phone, yet alone the Facebook app, it's used 56% of my battery!

That's unusually high, but it is always the (if not one of the) highest battery users...

I think I need to look at an alternative app for Facebook that doesn't think it's the most important app on my phone!

My Facebook app has minimal effect on my battery. 56& means there is something wrong.

I found my data usage was much higher with the Facebook app too. Thought the whole point of dedicated apps was to avoid that.

So you removed the Facebook app, and then re-installed it? And that had a positive outcome?

I don't understand if you uninstalled it how you were left with an old version?

yes it seems to have sorted it but it's only been one day. I think the facebook app is built into the phone's OS out of the box so it just had the updates on top. When I uninstalled it, it left an old version

Weirdly I had this exact problem on my oneplus 3 yesterday.

Never ever run the battery down but yesterday it went to 0 and Facebook was the offender. Whereas usually it is "screen"

They were probably testing the new background camera feed.

It's been well known for a couple years now that they tap into the microphone and if the server voice-recognises certain keywords they usually serve adverts to the user a few hours later. Next logical step is video.
