Facebook on Android just eats your battery

Mine was definitely chewing my battery today. I have the app installed, but I haven't been using it, and its set not to do any background refreshing or notifications unless the app is opened and refreshed manually. Instead, I have been using the mobile site.

I am seeing more and more issues with facebook (app) these days. For example, more often than not, if I tap "comments" then tap on "....replies", the keyboard nearly always pops up as though it thinks I want to type a reply - annoying when you only want to read it having to dismiss the keyboard each and every time.

More recently, I can just be scrolling down and the "Cut/Copy/Paste" menu just randomly appears as though I've held down on a post.

Also, if I scroll the end of the comments it's too easy to dismiss the entire comments box by mistake.

The mobile website doesn't seem to suffer the same issues.

That being said, there it was, 2 facebook processes chewing my battery when I turned on CPU usage, when I realised that I only had < 20% battery left in a day when I'd normally be in the 60s.

Phone S7 Edge.

Don't use Facebook app. Use website with a short cut to it on your home screen to pretend it's an app.

Don't use Android Pay either, they both spam location services to hell and back.

I've always heard this but I can't say I've ever experienced it, as of 19:15 today Facebook has used 2% from phone being taken off charge this morning.
I'm not a Facebook fiend though it should be said, I might bring it up 2 or 3 times a day for a 5 minute browse and that would be it.
Even on past devices I've not noticed Facebook being excessive. I tried metal quite recently but it just doesn't have the same ease of use and cross-app support as the regular Facebook app.

I've hardly used Facebook and Messenger today... Yet their battery and CPU time was monstrous!

Facebook has nearly 7hrs of CPU time, with only 19s CPU foreground! Messenger was two and a half hours!

Third was "Android System" with 29mins...

I swapped Metal for Swipe to give it a go for a bit and it feels pretty nice to use, can't decide which to stick with but both are great alternatives to Facebook and Messenger.

Edit:
Metal Pro vs Swipe Pro, both with Material themes enabled:

In my experience it doesn't really work flawlessly and feels very beta. Unsure if it is beta or is like a US only?

It's working fine for me, I'm using version 3.1. I'm trying out the Facebook Lite app at the moment too, although it feels rather basic so I may just go back to using the mobile site.

Actually now you mention that, I do sometimes get "An error has occurred" when I try to take a photo and send it from within the app itself. If I take the photo with the regular camera app and then send it though, it's always fine.

I didn't really expect to stick with it to be honest, but it works well enough and the regular Messenger app is so bloated I can't face going back to it.
