Facebook's takeover of the Internet

Personally I have a Facebook account but don't really use it, I prefer other means of communication, as such I have only my name and email address on their (with privacy settings to protect even that as much as possible).

Facebook doesn't provide, to me, any services that are worth the loss of privacy, as lets face it Facebook is purely there to data mine and sell your information, Google does the same thing but they at least serve a useful purpose to me.

I also stay signed out of it generally, and if someone/something links to Facebook I have to be really interested to bother signing in to see it, it's probably not that important.
Couldn't agree more...

I also find it odd the number of sites with facebook integration, however I've had a fb account for a few years now and I have no real issue with it. It's not like they force you to put genuine information about yourself on your page, the only thing you need for a facebook account is an email address, everything else on your profile can be fake if you want... Plenty of people I know don't even use their real name on facebook so I don't see what the issue with 'privacy' is.

Look at it from the point of view of Canvas. They use Facebook accounts so that they themselves do not have to manage as much user account creation, user management and user security.

Add to that, Facebook is self promoting its the ultimate pyramid scheme. You add Canvas to your profile 100 of your mates see it and 10 join up, the cycle continues its win win.

Love it or hate it, I am on the fence don't use it but see no harm, it provides more than just a social networking interface now.

EDIT; Poor grammar but hey ho :)

I'm not allowed to say what I want to say as it upsets a Mod apparently, but Facetardbooks own Terms of Service explicitly say you cannot force anyone to join Facetardbook or even get existing Facetardbookers to 'Like' anything for promotion or any other services. I would report them for the violation of the ToS and get their Facetardbook account banned. :)

Just a quick question, when you sign up for Facebook do you have to give them all your information to be able to create an account or do you just need the basics like name and location?

Huh?

Surely it only mines what you let it. give it no info and you are fulfilling your need to be private to them.

Indeed, hence why I have no problem with having an account as the only information of mine that they 'can' sell is my name and email address, not exactly an issue (both, and more, are available to members of this forum, name is posted at least a couple of times so even guests can see it)

I just don't see the point of using it for something like websites, or even viewing images, as that does give them more information about my potential likes/dislikes, I have no idea of the level of their observation on all facebook related activity but leaving it signed out negates that anyway.

I can sort of see the OP's point. I dont mind Facebook but it is sort of becoming.. the internet. Last year when the local bus services were delayed due to snow (I couldnt get my car out) the only way of following service updates was using the bus companies facebook page - they had removed the live update page on their own website in favour of a facebook page.

It's this sort of thing that frustrates me, and in the long term, is more and more companies placing their net presence into the hands of a private company really that prudent?

Facebook does everyone so much better and so much more easily, I know people who are near enough computer illiterate who have a facebook and have set up groups to organise things.

The OP could be considered a bit of a wierdo who I think previously claimed he would never purchase an Apple product (even second hand) on principle iirc, so combine that with this and take from it what you will.

Is that not a good thing though? Their own website might have been hammered and slow, where as facebook will be far more reliable in terms of stability at busy periods.

Having it as a supplementary resource is great but as a replacement resource it's not such a bright idea I don't think.

What part would you like me to explain to you? There aren't really any big words so I don't understand your problem to be able to assist you in any way. Do you require a Translation or something?

I just don't understand what the hell you're saying. The fact you are calling facebook, "facetardbooks" or whatever indicates that you have aspergers, not many friends, or both.

The internet is another means of communication, FB is an application running on it.
Actually, the internet is a data base of knowledge and applications.
Facebook is a means of communication running through the internet.
Now this isn't entirely bad in itself as it somewhat streamlines the internet experience for many
It is extremely bad because 600 million facebook users think facebook IS the internet, they rather spend all day updating their profile telling their 700 friends they just took a **** and their finger ripped through the tissue when they wiped their ass, than taking advantage of the infinite opportunities of the internet.

Facebook is just a counter productive product and some what useless application from a ginger ****** who claims to be a hacker.
No other website/company should ever feed it to such an extent that it will grow into a massive useless internet resource hog. (because that literally is all it is)

I don't use facebook because there is simply nothing for me to do on it, but no one should ever be forced to use it like the OP.

The OP was saying how a service he wanted to use was forcing people to have a Facetardbook Account. I explained that this is against Facetardbooks Terms of Service. You replying 'Huh?' indicates you are a bit stupid, use Facetardbook and both.

The main part of your genius (read painstakingly obvious) statement that didn't really make sense is "I would report them for the violation of the ToS and get their Facetardbook account banned.".

in foxs case then yes it is essentially the bus company being cheap/lazy but i can see how practical it must be for them.

in about ten clicks and for free they have a 'site' that is easily updated and that the whole of the internet (assuming it wasnt set to private) can look at in seconds from all types of OS/browser and from the majority of mobile phones.

i dont think i have a problem with it.

I don't make their Terms of Service they do, you break their Terms you lose the Account, that's from their own site:
