Failed driving test

I do agree that with some instructors, common sense doesn't come into play.

I failed my first test on a dual roundabout because I didn't come to a complete stop on the 2nd roundabout...which was completely empty. He even slammed on the dual controls as soon as I went past the give way lines, there was absolutely no need.

I sat my Institute of Advanced Motorists test a couple of weeks ago and passed. The strange thing is that if I'd driven like that on a learner test then I would have failed.
One obvious example is that the learner test teaches you to signal at all times onto and off of roundabouts. The IAM teach you not to give a signal if it is unnecessary (eg there are no other road users).

I failed my automatic test because about 100m behind me a lorry had to slow down in order for me to reverse around the corner. The road was double the width it normally is for a single lane so even if he'd got to me while I was doing the manoeuvre he could easily have passed me. However I was failed for doing that and not stopping completely :/

Argued till I was blue in the face but the guy was a gimp.

I failed my first test for reversing around a corner without being in reverse (stupid hill). The examiner wasn't buying my "sometimes it falls out of gear" routine.

i failed mine by tapping a kerb on a 3 point turn, an di mean tap the cr just rested on it as i tried to take off, didnt have enough bite on the cluth and released the brake a little to early

nothing i can do but shell out another £42

iirc you are allowed to touch the curb, just not mount it :/ did the car lift at all? If he felt it then its a fail, if he didn't feel it, but perhaps saw it in the mirror then its not a fail.

No, if your car even brushes the kerb it's a major and an instant fail.

Failing sucks but I guess it makes you a better driver.

Took my 4 tries lol. But I have been driving for over a year and not one problem yet

/touches wood

How is that a fail? I was taught to acknowledge people allowing me out of junctions with a wave. So long as they signalled me out by hand , and not with the lights. And did so in my test.

Hang on, you were saying thanks whereas the OP was waving pedestrians across the road.

I've got my test in 3 weeks.. I always forget to look in the mirrors before I indicate, its so frustrating. I tend to indicate then look, if at all. My instructor said my driving skill was quite good, but driving like I do won't pass the test. I think because I havn't had many lessons, and I've been driving around with my mum for so long, I've picked up a few bad habits. The test centre also happens to be in an industrial estate which always has cars and vans parked on each side of the road everywhere and is horrible to drive around which has me slightly worried.

The guy who failed me for my first test was a bit of a gimp. Half the road was blocked with road works, and some bint in a van had stopped in her lane and was signaling for me to pull out. I couldn't pull out because she was in the bloody way.

The examiner failed me for "not making progress" because he claimed I hadn't noticed her signaling. I had, but there was nowhere for me to go. He shrugged his shoulders...

Actually this is untrue.

Touching the kerb isn't an instant fail. My instructor told me about a girl he taught who actually mounted the pavement but still passed. It depends whether the examiner judges it to have been a serious or dangerous fault. Most likely for potentially causing a collision or inconveniencing another driver.

I was under the impression kissing a kerb was a minor (control of some sort) however mounting it was a fail. Pavements are not for cars etc etc.

Thats what I was told prior to my test about a month back.

Same.

Apparently just bumping the kerb whilst parallel parking is fine as long as you safely reposition yourself. But actually mounting the kerb = fail.

Urgh that's so harsh! Unlucky mate. Nearly as lame as what happened to my Brother; he failed coming out of the test centre and the examiner said nothing and made him continue ;)

I did the same. I failed on my bay park before I left the test centre. I knew I'd failed because I asked the examiner straight and I just got out the car. She asked if I wanted to continue for the experience and as I was very angry I said, no I ****ing don't I'm not wasting my ****ing fuel! I laugh when I think back but my was I angry at the time, lol.

That can't be true. I hit the same kerb three times on my left reverse and still passed. I repositioned myself each time and eventually got it right and passed with 7 minors.

I think some instructors will exaggerate things like if it should touch the curb so you concentrate more. This tends to have the opposite effect on me though.
