Fake £1 coins - who's got one?

I got £8 in pound coins change from a tenner for my pizza slice for lunch, and I'm suspicious about 3 of the coins - they dont have writing around the edges, just an enscribed banding.

However, as said above no-one ever checks pound coins, so its not a massive issue at the moment - although someone somewhere is getting pretty rich off this!

I've had plenty of coins without the writing around the edge, just that pattern, but I'm not sure if they are fake - never seen it mentioned before.

Edit: I think it might be ok actually, according to royalmint.com:

I found it amusing this morning when they had a chap on BBC breakfast to talk about this. When asked what people should do if they discover one of their pound coins is fake, he replied " Well, once a coin is discovered to be fake it's worthless and there's not a lot they can do about it"

Surely the answer he should have given was simply.... stick it in a vending machine!!! ;o)

When I worked in retail the amount of hassle customers would give me when I told them I couldn't accept this as payment but I also couldn't give it back to them was stupid.

They would make such a big fuss over it then ask me how I knew it was a fake.

"Well the coin is so soft that I can make a dent it it by pushing it on the edge of a table"

Quite a few of the workers in shops in york check notes regularly whenever they are handed to them. I notice it more in york than anywhere else. Which is odd as york is actually quite a rich area. I guess its all the scaffs living in the suburbs :P
