Fake Degree Problem

I've been asked by a former Canadian co-worker, if I can find out whether a Degree (issued by a UK University) is fake or not. He is in the process of employing somebody, but he's a little suspicious that the guy never took the Degree he claims to have. Is there some kind of Database that can be checked, online?

This is all taking place overseas, and the guy in question never brought his Degree with him. How convenient. :p

I told him to just call the University in question, and ask whether 'Joe Bloggs' studied for 'Degree Title' during 'xx' years. But I'm guessing it won't be that simple.

I'd have thought calling the university would be fine. At worst case they'd take a few days to get back to you.

Perhaps the employer could suggest a faxed copy of the certificate? Possibly one of his family members would have access to it or even photocopy it and email it to him.

I'm sure there should be a way of actually looking at it, but like said above, phoning the university can't be that troublesome can it? :D

I guess you guys are right then. I'll pass that onto him. He was just concerned that the UK may have some different 'system' compared to Canada, and I wasn't so sure. :)

It's a new role for him. He said the previous people in his Position, simply never checked. This is in China, so that's no suprise. :o

Did you say China?

I know quite few Chinese international students, apparently you can spend 4000 pounds on a fake qualification. If your co-worker is suspecting, it probably is true.

Too many rich kids now days from China who refuse to study yet they are afraid daddy's going to whop their *** if they don't graduate, after spending £9208349234 in UK on FUN activities such as gambling.

I can imagine that the uni will just say "DATA PROTECTION1111111ONE!!!!!!1111111ELEVEN" but it's worth a try.

Call the University. I used to work for a company that did pre-employment background checks for other companies, and that was pretty much how we checked most educational qualifications.

there is an organisation which can review qualifications internationally - I had to have my UK degree vetted by them for acceptance on an MBA in the US - it was a decade ago so can't remember the name of it but i'm sure googleable

Call the uni - find the relevant dept - some unis ask you to go through the college/school its self other unis keep all the records in one place - they will require the request in writing and if its urgent most will accept a fax on company headed paper. Depending on the size of the uni most return within 3 days.

A university will not want its awarded qualification de-valued, which is what could happen if everyone claimed to have a degree.
If the guy really is dire at his job it also doesn't reflect well on the uni.

There are data protection issues, however a potential employer could simply ask the university "Did John Smith get a degree in....."
A simple yes we can confirm or no, we don't have a student by that name I wouldn't have thought would go against any data protection laws.

well remember that guy in the apprentice, they caught him out after they got in touch with his old uni :D

I found his details on our database, and he passed his catering / hospitality qualification - I was slightly confused by that.

(I shouldn't really mention that - data protection - but since no names have been mentioned :D )
