Falling out of love with gaming?

I find I'm short on time. I have a small window to play games between 8pm and 10pm and most days I have commitments with the family.

So that means I rarely have time to play long RPG games because I'll play for a couple of hours and might lose my way when I come back to it so will just restart and waste my time.

Mostly I play Rocket League or PUBG with friends. I do like racing games and play quite a bit now I own a Rift but none of my gamer friends play racing games and it's only a matter of time until I get bugged to play a game with them.

I think that a lot of games are just repetitive. There are too many sequels and too many formulaic games that have literally just changed their skin, looking at you Ubisoft and Warner Bros, that I don't feel a sense of achievement in these games.

Comes and goes for me aswell, though I'm always chasing it! It's just much more difficult to switch off as an adult I think, I'm always gaming and thinking about all the stupid chores I should be doing instead. Occasionally games get through my grown-up shields though, FFXV I played about 60 hours and Destiny aswell (solo I might add!).

I think having a dedicated space for it would really help me, but it's not very girlfriend safe :(.
It's funny how we worry that out gaming is not socially acceptable around our wives and girlfriends but I guarantee they don't give a rat's behind about how you feel about garbage TV shows like Essex and X Factor.

I do have my own space to play PC games and it is non-negotiable with my wife. In fact my kids, both girls, would rather sit and play games with me than watch trash TV so let's see which activity is REALLY the antisocial one.

really wish my work internet didnt block my "he's right you know" meme for that!

Yeah I really enjoy rocket league

I suppose when I mention my social circle, most of my gaming buddies are on maybe once a week compared to say 6 hours a day a few years back due to children, partners and jobs..

Playing online on your own is so boring!

Then add me and some other that come and go lol.

I have two children and married, my time is so limited that half hour bursts is great.

Hennessyw on psn

I dont get much game time these days. So I still have loads of interest generally. Wish I had more time to game!

Although I can understand why people would feel bored if they are gaming for hours every day.

Also, I think if someone has gamed for years it can feel a bit like got the t shirt and it is harder to be as excited, particularly with how safe devs are with designs these days. Bit same old same old. I dont get the same wow as I have in past decades. Playing Quake for the first time compared to doom. Tomb raider 1 after 2d megadrive games. Half life.

Seems there are no real 'jumps' these days compared to past decades. Nothing significant anyway.

I do as well and I got and Xbox X on release day, most games do seem to bore me after a while now days and It can be a chore to complete a game. There is games I look forward to playing next year but currently there is nothing out that is a must for me and I own both the PS and XB.
Currently playing Assassins Creed Origins and Ive got games like Forza 7 and Rise of the Tomb Raider that I have not started yet, I have no real desire to start them but I will, when I was younger I would have put many hours into both already.

One example of a game that I got bored with and had no desire to complete was Fallout 4, its the same with a few big in depth games like this where I can play it for a while and then just not bother completing it, it might happen with AC O but i'm trying to concentrate on the main story before I get bored and stop playing it.

As @BuffetSlayer said if you have been a long time gamer most games these days are all samey and it's only on the rare occasion we get something a bit different.

As other have probably said, it's worth getting a Switch just for Zelda and Mario. They're both glorious and the best things I've played in years. My PS4 pro and gaming pc gather dust. I was also going through a slump in gaming interest.

I blame the games of today to be honest.

I can fire up my PS1/PS2 and still sit and play them for hours. I put the new Resident Evil 7 DLC on last night and just couldn't be bothered to play it.

Funny this thread cropped up. For ages now, I've been wanting to get a gaming PC but never had the money. Now I do, I've realised that this year I've actually gamed very little. In fact, I think I've played just three games on my PS4 since March - Horizon ZD, Dishonored and The Witness. I've tried playing other stuff on PC from the 360 era that my GPU can run and yet I can't seem to get into anything. Whether it's because they're older games and they don't look that good anymore or whether it's something about playing on a PC that I don't like. Not sure. Either way, I'm probably just going to stick with my PS4 Pro and splash the PC money on a new 4K TV. At least that will be something that gets used every day.

I spent a load of money to build my own gaming PC a few years ago. Within a year I bought a PS4 and rarely use my PC now. I know that may be difficult for some people to understand particularly as my PC was/is quite powerful and I am so bad on control pads, but I cant say i have missed it overly much. One of the main draws for me to consoles, as a multiplayer FPS fan, is the security in console gaming. PC gaming is hacked to hell and back these days. Suppose it always has been really. Even though I am terrible on pad and get my ass handed to me at least im losing to honest players who are just better than me (bar the odd XIM user) and Im totally fine with that. I suppose after 20+ years of PC gaming I finally got fed up of the hack fest. Felt like for every genuine good player there were 10 others wbo hacked. Hell, even players I thought were legit over the years have been caught hacking. Just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

I was a hardcore PC gamer for years but Im more than happy to continue console gaming and there are some cracking games to be had. PC gaming is OK and all but only if the latest tech and £1500 gpu's get you all excited (and you can afford it).

Building a brand spanker PC to your own spec and splurging a wad of cash is a nice experience. Really nice, I wont lie. But it is somewhat hollow when you realise you can get the same gaming enjoyment from a console costing a fraction of the price. When you are immersed in a game, extra bells and whisltes and frame rates become a secondary consideration.

Bang for buck, consoles are awesome. Plus you get to play them on a comfy sofa and a massive telly!!! :p

I build a superb gaming rig in summer 2016. I lasted about 6 - maybe 7 months with it before I eventually went back to the PS4 pro. Gaming PC's are amazing, but they just feel so isolated to me. i just like to fire up my PS4 - look my feed anyone I follow and see what they've been playing, scores, pinball, they sort of stuff, trophies, PC offered the same, with Steam but PS4 just feels a lot more connected.

I should use that gaming PC more, it cost me a wedge of money - shame.

I can’t play things with a lot of dialogue or games that take a while to learn just don’t have the patience anymore.

Life often gets in the way of gaming time, I find, but when I do get the time - I love to spend a good few hours just vegged out on the PS4!

I've never been one to 100% a game, or get fixated on gamer scores/trophies, I just play them the way I want to - I won't go chasing things; playing that way has always seemed like a chore!

I often do find myself bouncing from game to game, not completing them for ages, but it's good to come back to them. I got quite far into Uncharted 4 before moving onto other things, and didn't return to it for almost a year - but recently restarted it and finished it. Likewise Arkham Knight was another I put on the back burner, but have recently returned to - I think this bouncing around impacts the love a little, as when I do finally return to a game to grind it for a good few hours; it's never failed to pull me back in.

I dont tend to plough on with games I'm not enjoying. That just saps your desire to game even further. Some people think "I've payed £30 for it, I'm finishing it. I'd rather stick on MM and get most of my money back and move on.

Not sure whether this should be in general discussion or on here as it's gaming related. I have a gaming PC, PS4, WII U modded and an xbox one S.

And I've found lately I just cant sit down and grind a game out. Maybe 2-3 years ago I could smash hours on skyrim, witcher, warcraft etc. I rent games from boomerang and I've become a bit of a joke in my social group because I never complete a game, some jokes go as far as I wont even complete the installation lol.

I rented south park, horizon and I've given up within maybe 20 mins, I'll return to fifa, rocket league or call of duty and I guess it's the whole playing against someone in a short space of time. But I play my games all night jumping from one machine to another without being able to settle..

I'm just wondering have people gone through the same situation. It's frustrating in general, even more so when you know something just isn't right.

The quality of games has nose dived in my opinion, haven't completed one this year. Next year God of War might be the answer, it will for me I hope.

I struggle to motivate to play single player games, which annoys me because i really want to smash some, last single player game i played was witcher 3. But my passion for online gaming is still running strong at 30, guess i just love competing... Mostly playing PUBG, CSGO!

I don't believe it's due to age that one gets bored of gaming.

I think the main reason people get fed up with games is because games are mostly designed for teenagers. As you get older, the harder it becomes to relate to these titles. Hence, some of these games assume everyone has 60+ hours a week available to them. Most gamers are in their 30's, devs need start making more content designed for them.

Also, doing the following may help:

1) Stop playing games for a while. Don't force yourself to play. Take up another hobby. Try something new, then come back to it.

2) Limit yourself to one platform. I did this years ago, as a result i play more and find gaming more enjoyable as that platform (PC) gets all my attention. There are too many games out there now, I'm not going to play everything and neither are you. You'll be better off in your pocket too.

3) Be more strict when it comes to game purchases. If you have a huge backlog, don't buy new games until you've gotten through most of it. Be honest and ask yourself: Do i need this? Am i really going to play it? Is it just going to sit in my backlog? Also, narrow down the genres you'll play now, not what the teenage you would play. Your gaming tastes change as you get older. You need to identify what works now for you and what doesn't.

4) If you have a massive catalogue of games, discipline yourself to only play one or two at a time. Pick the one or two you really, really want to play, add them to your favourite list (or equivalent) and don't look back. Once these games have been complete (or close to it), repeat the cycle.

5) If you don't like the game, dump it instantly, no one should settle for mediocrity. Play something worth your time.
