Falling out of love with gaming?

I’m in a similar situation, could play a few hours everyday with the long sessions thrown in regularly. I’ve basically just cut out the daily grind type of games, no more 2 hours on COD daily or what ever popular shooter is out.

Now I just mainly play single player games, and wait till one I really like the look of. Last game I played was Zelda botw, before that horizon and managed some long sessions with each without much trouble. Invetween completing games have a healthy break.

Also I find I can’t switch between games no more, well easily anyway. Takes we a while to get to grips with controls, weight of a game so whilst playing that can’t just chuck something else in.

To be honest I get a feeling like this every now and then, every month or 2 I guess. Even if I have a few games to pick from I end up feeling like I just can't be bothered as they are often all so dull. The only game to really keep me hooked is the Souls series, when you play one of those fresh for the first time, it's so captivating. Most run of the mill games can't replicate that for me.

This year Zelda and Mario really held my attention, they were fantastic. But in between those it was a bit quiet.

I also recommend trying to play something you wouldn't usually play, or something lesser known. Little games like Golf Story were just fun and unique and break up the gaps between the bigger releases.

I want to get hooked on an online game like I used to, but it's a struggle. Currently trying rainbow 6 siege and it is fantastic but it's up and down

Thing is it's a big passion of mine and I can talk about games for ages, and fortunately I have a group of buddies that are all the same. But to playing together is rare. Listening to gaming podcasts etc is a good way to keep up to speed and interested in it all

I find in the summer the PC gets less use as I am outside a lot more doing mountain biking , gardening and other jobs the wife gives me. In the winter I tend to use the PC more for on line gaming. Current game is BF1 which is very good on clan servers with admins.

I was never into gaming much when i was younger, FFVII on the PS1 was the only game i ever really got into & spend hours playing it back then.

But yet here i am at 41 with a Gaming Laptop, Xbox One X, Snes Mini & a Switch for Christmas of the Wife.
I spend more time gaming now then i ever did when i was in my Teens & 20's.

So I think age does play a massive part, but I also think it's down to boredom. Gaming isn't very productive. When I'm bored, I take up a new electronics project, like the current VHF linear amplifier I'm working on. I'll eventually pick up a game again, although the buzz won't last long, at least nothing like when I was a teen. I also think dopamine receptors get burned out through repeated exposure to the 'highs' gaming once brought.

moved mainly over to ps4 now, and i've been buying games to play as i like the look of them/idea of the gameplay involved etc, but few seem to grab/hold my attention, last few i really enjoyed were uncharted 4, horizon zero dawn and assasins creed syndicate.

I think I've fallen out of love with couch gaming and PC gaming.
I'm starting to like portable systems more again now (Switch/Vita/3DS).
I find I just dont have the time to complete certain games and certain franchises (very highly rated such as Uncharted) leave me shortchanged as to whether the game was worth the 20-30 hours.

Then you have gems like Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem, which centre on the gameplay and nail it without having to be an interactive movie.

I stoppled playing rubbish like FIFA + Football manager 4-5 years ago after realising how much time i wasted (literal time sinks)

I have found I am liking the portable systems more too. I have bought and sold both 3DS/VITA consoles and find myself thinking of re-purchasing. Not sure if the Switch has driven this mindset...........

Also a post or two back I saw somebody say stick to a single platform and I couldn't agree more. I have the luxury, like many here I assume, of having all the main platforms and spend most of my time deciding what to buy/play and not playing anything.

Nintendo has always produced my favourite systems/games so perhaps I should have stuck to them ignoring the rest.

Oh yeah Football Manager was great but boy was it a time killer, and all for nothing, console games are the same but I can easily stop playing them and play in shorter intervals, FM was not that case, so I also gave up with it.

PS4 offers excellent JRPG goodness + phenomenal exclusives such as Bloodborne.
Nintendo probably have the highest quality exclusive titles of any platform. Their games are like magic, the attention to detail is incredible. However they SEVERELY lack third party support of big titles which will leave a lot of people short changed.
PC has the huge price entry point, gives you an amazing back catalogue and access to games the other systems can't support due to logistics (Divinity Original Sin 2 this year) and allows your back catalogue to be updated with your hardware (4k assasins creed trilogy would require the developers to actually develop it for Ps4 pro.xbox 1 then u double dip).

I think long term the Switch is great due to its versatility. I have one and Odyssey was a phenomenal experience and the quality it oozes outclasses 99% of other games.
In regards to value for money, a PS4, 3DS and Vita will give you a load of content + portability + exclusives and given they've been around for ages now, their games will be extremely cheap.

I find it harder and harder to recommend PC gaming given the high price entry point in regards to graphics cards and the fact the PS4 Pro + XBOX one are offering HDR in their games which debatably looks better than 4k. The 60fps and back catalogue is a HUGE positive but really PC gaming seem to be a tad behind on HDR support which doesn't make sense given the superior hardware + price.

For the first time ever I'm contemplating buying a gaming laptop. My nintendo switch has taught me that graphical fidelity on the go is NOT important. Whats important is you get a fluid gaming experience and you're able to actually complete your titles. If someone were to release a Nintendo switchy steam device, I'd be all over it. Likewise if I could find an affordable 13'' gaming laptop which can 1080p/60fps all my existing games now, I'd probably grab it. If I could potentially work myself through my 300-odd steam games on the go, I'd be so happy. However all gaming laptops seem overpriced with very poor customer service.

You can stream xbox one to a Windows 10 device, which may suit what you're after.

I'm struggling again. I really need to start the Horizon Zero Dawn DLC but I just can't motivate myself. Nothing's holding my attention - I think I need Ship of Heroes to release on PC as I would love to play City of Heroes again. Haven't played an MMO since then but none at the moment take my fancy.

Console gaming isn't any cheaper and people need to stop pretending it is. If you want to play Bloodborne, Forza 7 and Mario Odyssey, that's almost £700 in hardware alone. And that's not even including those games or the best version of the PS4/Xbox hardware (Pro/X). Plus if you want to play online add PSN/Xbox Live fees on top, plus whatever Nintendo will charge for their online service next year. Adding all of the mentioned games, online subs and the best versions of the PS/Xbox, oh and add a decent sized SD Card for the Switch because it isn't worth a **** without one. You're looking at £1200+.

Plus buying digital on consoles is a game of Russian roulette as all three firms are notorious for closing down services. Plus only 1 out of 3 offer refunds on digital.

Aye, console gaming is great and dead cheap..

Also, regarding HDR on PC. i'll leave this here as mentioned on PC Gamer:

HDR has plenty of promise, but the road ahead isn’t clear yet. The biggest problems aren’t technical roadblocks but competing, partially incompatible standards that threaten to detour early adopters into expensive dead ends. No less than five HDR standards currently exist

I don't believe it's due to age that one gets bored of gaming.

I think the main reason people get fed up with games is because games are mostly designed for teenagers. As you get older, the harder it becomes to relate to these titles. Hence, some of these games assume everyone has 60+ hours a week available to them. Most gamers are in their 30's, devs need start making more content designed for them.

Also, doing the following may help:

1) Stop playing games for a while. Don't force yourself to play. Take up another hobby. Try something new, then come back to it.

2) Limit yourself to one platform. I did this years ago, as a result i play more and find gaming more enjoyable as that platform (PC) gets all my attention. There are too many games out there now, I'm not going to play everything and neither are you. You'll be better off in your pocket too.

3) Be more strict when it comes to game purchases. If you have a huge backlog, don't buy new games until you've gotten through most of it. Be honest and ask yourself: Do i need this? Am i really going to play it? Is it just going to sit in my backlog? Also, narrow down the genres you'll play now, not what the teenage you would play. Your gaming tastes change as you get older. You need to identify what works now for you and what doesn't.

4) If you have a massive catalogue of games, discipline yourself to only play one or two at a time. Pick the one or two you really, really want to play, add them to your favourite list (or equivalent) and don't look back. Once these games have been complete (or close to it), repeat the cycle.

5) If you don't like the game, dump it instantly, no one should settle for mediocrity. Play something worth your time.

Even Quake Champions is being dumbed down. :(

They’ve messed with the strafe jumping to make it easier for new comers. Everything has to be made easy nowadays.

Also, regarding HDR on PC. i'll leave this here as mentioned on PC Gamer:

PC gaming has a huge price of entry point IMO. I'm thinking including Windows 10, Keyboard, Mouse, optional XBOX controller + wireless dongle if you like couch gaming .... 1k+. If you're chasing 4k with higher end graphics cards then even more money.

I do think the Switch is on the expensive side though given Nintendo kill it on the peripherals. Not going to even debate that given I got STUNG on the Wii U side of things.

But I really struggle to reccomend or even invest in PC gaming myself now with GTX 1070tis going at around £450! which is really what you'll be looking for to venture into anywhere near 4k gaming ... which the XBOX one and PS4 pro kind of offer.

Yes HDR is new.. but its being enjoyed by many people watching films & PS4 Pro owners. I personally think PC owners should feel a bit shortchanged but meh, fine if people want to wait for the dust to settle before PC games get it, fine I guess? ... I personally feel if I'm investing >£500, we deserve the latest and greatest, especially on the monitor front when you compare it to some TVs.

BTw PLEASE feel free to prove me wrong as I'm looking to be convinced into buying a card for my peasantly GTX 670 but I'm struggling to come to terms with paying around £400-600 for a 1070/1080 as I feel the value is not there and that will get me a whole console + games + controller.

FYI I do agree with you, long term wise PC gaming is better value given its also a PC, you get a HUGE back catalogue, steam sales + humble bundles mean you can technically never pay anywhere near full price for games, your games get automatically upgraded to 4k as your hardware does, their is tonnes more customisation available etc. Trust me, I'm not hating on PC gaming. I just find the price point of graphics cards this generation and the fact they've not moved compared to the consoles which are plumetting make is far less fanciful.

After 6 or 7 years constant gaming on the 360 I fell out of love with gaming. The direction it took with DLC and pay to win. I was fine with added maps and packs and content but the added gambling on equipment and boxes no thanks. My son now plays a few games and I play maybe one or two games per year. I don't follow gaming any more. I find the UI on the Xbox one an utter mess. I just found better things to do with my time and money that the current way of gaming offers me little value.

Also the utterly ****ing lazy patch system. Seriously what excuse is there for that. Lob a game in xmas day and the poor lad has to wait longer than loading up A.C.E on cassette for the commodore 64 in 1987 just to play a game.
