Having never actually getting round to finishing FO3 when I bought it and seeing NV is out, I thought I'd play through FO3 and finish it before getting NV. However, I was wondering what texture mods there are to make it look a bit better? Also what gameplay mods do people recommend?

Recommended mods found here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/

Marts Mutant Mod
Fellout
NMCs Texture Pack
EVE - Energy Visuals Enhanced
Darnified UI
Fallout Wanders Edition

Those are the big ones I use, I also use a number of smaller things, weapon mods and model replaces etc but there are too many to list.

they're not related, fo:nv is based more on the story of fo1/2 (NCR,Khans etc)

Yeh, I just wanted to actually finish it finally before I bought another Fallout game to play! :)

Ta for the link there, I'll check them out! :)

Seems like the Fallout 3 Stutter fix will come in handy, much like in Oblivion, it's one of those annoying issues with the engine, ruins the games immersion massively!

This ^

There is a flaw in the engine that affects some nvidia/ati owners via the drivers

Thing that gets me is compare the engine to the one that is used in Just Cause 2. I've never had any loading/stuttering issues with that game, and the graphics aren't half bad either, as well as the playing area being much larger in all dimensions!

Fallout 3 and Oblivion have considerably more depth to them than Just Cause 2...

Fallout Wanderers Edition and associated mods (WMK, Project Beauty, MMM, etc) are always a good place to start.

Yeah, that is obvious to see, but what I'm saying is it fustrates me that they can't fix the stuttering issue on what is a relatively old engine, and for graphics which aren't exactly on the cutting edge. Plus like I said the playing area is smaller, so that shouldn't be an excuse.

Luckily, I never had the stutter issue when I played it on release.. I've got a different graphics card now I think though so I'll make a note of the fix just in case! :)

Fenris above named a couple: NMC texture pack (says on the tin), and Fellout (removes the yellow/green tint in the game, brings back relatively blue skies).
Energy visuals enhanced is also just visuals IIRC.

Can anyone suggest mods that just improve the look of FO3, without changing gameplay at all?

Fellout
NMCs Texture Pack
EVE - Energy Visuals Enhanced
Darnified UI

EVE does change a few things but only to make energy weapons actually worth using.

Yeah, biggest. A 5850 is overkill for fallout3 (if you can get it all working properly!).

Edit: Fenris..... I don't suppose you'd so kind to post your mod load order here? I've been having problems getting FWE and MMM to work together.

Are there any good weapon skin packs about? I saw my brother playing it on his 360 and the weapons look horrible. I hate it when futuristic weapons look like they were bodged together in a shed.
