I played nearly all of Fallout 3 before i could get Live working so I missed mostly if not all achievements. Is there anyway of post updating these or is it replay?

I thought achievements were stored locally if there's no network connection? I'm pretty sure that I've played offline and still received achievements.

Er... pardon my ignorance but why bother with achievements? Kind of pointless aren't they? I can't say not having them detracted from my playing experience at all. And replaying just to get them? Do you collect snow too? That seems a little less like a pointless exercise.

I'm not trolling, I'm honestly really confused as to why anyone's interested in getting them.

They're actually quite insightful with Fallout 3, in terms of being able to compare them with friends to see who took what routes through the game, completed which missions, had what kind of karma, killed how many humans etc etc :)

Ah, fair enough. Not the usual 'kill 1000 ***' , 'complete the game using only your feet whilst carrying a fridge' or 'kill the end boss using a commemorative Golden Jubilee tea set.' type of achievement then. I understand ;)

AFAIK, The achievements must be completed while you are signed into live. If you save at regular intevals and don't overright your saves, then you should be able to load a save game just prior to each achievement and get them that way, but TBH you would be probably be better off starting with a new character.

I also seem to remember that when you do sign into live, your previous "non-live" character cannot easily be loaded (I think that when signed into live, savegames are held in a different directory to when you were not signed into live, and hence you need to move your "non live" svaes into the correct directory to use them while signed in. However this may have changed)

The achievements aren't retroactive unfortunately, which is kinda stupid given that its fairly obvious if you've completed a quest because its in your log as completed...

No LIVE and non-LIVE save files still use different directories for some stupid reason. There are some things that i just don't understand, like why devs insist on making all your save files as 1 long list, even better when you can't actually NAME them *cough* Bethesda *cough* instead of seperating them.

I moved the savefiles into the live directory but when logging in to live, it didn't recognise any progress of achievements.

This is what I've been doing.. Just wondered if there was a quicker way.

No not really.. I think they bring an extra element to a game. The problem is with PC gaming is that it's inconsistent. Some games do, some games don't, Some are Steam and other are GFWL so forth.

You can use the console cheat commands to add all 72 achievements 1 by 1 but TBH its much better & more enjoyable to play again from start to finish whilst connected to GFWLIVE as sometimes adding the achievements with the console can cause glitches & or you miss gameplay locations & scenarios.

Fallout3 is one of the best games for achievements because most introduce you to parts of the game you would otherwise miss. For instance there are something like 200 locations in the Fallout3 + 5 DLC locations in all. You will not see more than a 50% of these without going for the achievements as some locations are very well hidden & or contain rooms or content you will otherwise miss if you skip earning the achievements.

^I took the Explorer perk that shows all locations on the map, are there additional hidden ones?
Depends what part of the game you took the explorer perk in. AFAIK it only reveals the locations up to that part of the game so if it was before you had installed all 5 DLC then most likely you will be missing those locations until you discover them.

ive missed on tons of achievments by playing offline, doesnt really bother me, i know im good at games, i dont need a popup message to remind me of this :p

I'm up to level 10 now, is it worth getting Broken Steel & Point Lookout now or wait a while ?

Yes but play Broken Steel when you finish the main game as it follows through nicely. You can install these anytime really.. doesn't make any difference. The BS and the XP cap of 20 won't be raised to 30 until you have completed the main quest.

My main advice for this game is explore everywhere on foot and find as many locations as you can. Get the side quests out of the way and embark on the main quest when your at level 15/16 say. That said, you can finish off any side quest from the main game in broken steel but beware, the enemies become much harder and only appear in BS. Albino Scorpions and Mutant Overlords for example are not easy. So I think it best to get these out of the way sooner and build those experience points.

Use the Swift Learner perk too. This increases your skills early and unlocks future perks.

Play with positive Karma and create save games before level 8, 14, 20 and 30. You can grab additional achievements for completing these with good, negative and bad karma so you can replay the "level up" for each. It's a bit difficult to do this if you are on anything less than good Karma!

Well the main thing Broken Steel adds is 3 superpowered enemies to the wastelands. I'm still yet to encounter the Albino Radscorpion, the Ghoul is a pain (but can be 1 shotted with the Double Barelled Shotgun) but the Super Mutant is... lethal. So long as they have a normal weapon they're just a tough fight, but if they're wielding the Tri-Beam Laser things get stupid. Personally i'd say to avoid levelling too fast early on, if you do you might start to encounter them (such as by Lincolns Repeater or outside GNR) and if you haven't picked up enough gear or levelled carefully you'll have trouble taking them out.

Point Lookout is always worth getting imo, problem is the idiots at Bethesda gave all the human enemies a permanent +xx damage to every attack they make that ignores damage reduction, so a simple Tribal with a Knife ends up being more dangerous than Super Mutant Behemoths... even worse when you're trying to fight the inbreds with Rifles and Shotguns.

The 3 superpowered enemies don't come into play until you enter BS I believe.

Nah they spawn any time any where. I've encountered several Super Mutant Overlords outside GNR way below level20 before i could be anywhere near the BS content. I've also come across Ghoul Reavers (?) in the Lincoln Memorial. Its usually a Glowing One but it was a Reaver the last time i went. Also encountered 2 of them with Tri-Beams when you're in the Vault searching for the GECK when they 'ambush you' as you go across the bridge. Along with other places.

Thanks a lot Admiral Huddy.
Reading this has just reminded me how awesome Fallout 3 was and forced me to load it up again to buy and play the last bit of DLC.
Another lost afternoon!!!:p
