Hi all,

After never playing a fallout game and wanting a new open world rpg experience

Is their a particular fallout you would suggest over the rest?

Fallout 3 is my vote. That with mods is a superior experience to Fallout 4 (even with mods). Fallout 4 stripped out most RPG and story elements for stupid sim city.

Never played Fallout 2 but that might be a good shout too.

Often poor, ageing graphics don't bother me, especially when I replay Mass Effect every year or so. Not sure how I'll feel after playing ME:A; going to be tough pressing space and getting the power wheel instead of a jump jet blast.

Anyways, I don't know if I could play Fallout 3 now. I tried playing Oblivion after Skyrim and I just couldn't. Shame, as I've never played Oblivion and by many accounts it's generally better.

'Chronological' order is OK (from Fallout 3, never played the older Fallouts). I like them all.

I follow Oxhorn on YouTube, who does a lot of lore-related stuff.

And yes, NPCs are super robotic. Graphics are dated, animations are terrible, performance can be shocking at times, gameplay is clunky, but in my opinion, all not that important.

Games with many technical flaws, but still really interesting. Kinda like the Mass Effect series. Technically, Fallout 4 is the best, but I have a soft spot for New Vegas.

Know what you mean about ME. It is super clunky now, to the point that it would probably be very hard to convince anyone new to it to play.

This is what puts we off playing the Mass Effect again, It's not the graphics but the combat is crap. You have to just put it on easy and power through.

Yeah. I've completed the 3 on insanity twice, so now I just chuck it on normal and enjoy the story. The combat on a level 1 character on insanity is the definition of tedium; talk about bullet sponges.

Start with 3 then NV then 4.

Fallout 3 was my favourite from the above to play through and I put more time into that than NV or 4.

Fallout 3 for me, it's an incredible game.

Not saying previous Fallout games weren't great but F3 is where the series took the jump to 3D.

You don't play the Fallout games, you spend days and weeks installing, testing and removing mods, you get it looking and feeling just how you want it then you walk away and never play it due to the fact you're sick of the sight of it because you just spent three solid weeks doing all of the above. It's a gaming right of passage ;)

Having never played a Fallout game either, I tried the GOTY version of Fallout 3 a few months ago. I thought I'd thoroughly enjoy it as I loved Skyrim but after a while it became a bit monotonous because the story was a bit dull and the miniquests never really offered much in the way of reward. The DLC was ok but nowhere close to amazing. I actually bought the New Vegas complete package at the same time and even though I sound negative some of the things I experienced in 3 still make me want to try NV. After that I intend to give the first game a go too, even though it's very different.

I'd probably say if you can get the complete versions of 3 and NV cheap give them a go in that order...with different developers expect differences too! I actually considered ditching the Fallout games at one point though and just going with Mad Max instead as that's perpetually cheap these days.
