Fallout - never played where do you start?

Not sure what you mean? I'm not the one looknig to play fallout 2, nor am I the OP :D

I know, just noting the disparity between someone using the words "ageing graphics" to refer to Fallout 2 and then someone else about Mass Effect

It's a personal decision you need to make between either FO2 or FO3. They're fundamentally different games but set in the same universe. Personally I couldn't get on with FO2 but really enjoyed FO3. Your tastes might differ. Those would definitely be the two I recommend though, and with the GOG sale on at the moment and the Steam sale starting tomorrow, you should be in luck :).

For me Fallout 3 onwards was about soaking in the atmosphere of the environment, never bothered much about rewards etc. Just exploring in those games was the fun part for me.

You don't play the Fallout games, you spend days and weeks installing, testing and removing mods, you get it looking and feeling just how you want it then you walk away and never play it due to the fact you're sick of the sight of it because you just spent three solid weeks doing all of the above. It's a gaming right of passage ;)

This is Skyrim for me. Spend ages tweaking to reach Riverwood without crashing. Get bored by the time you reach Whiterun.

fallout 3 and all its addons and fallout NV and all its addons!

nexus mod manager makes it easy to install mods
the fallout 3 mods can improve simple things like textures

the sheer joy of finding places like little lamplight or the republic of Dave make it so worth playing..I still recall the sheer elation of cresting the rise as you leave the vault

plus the radio series of Herbert 'Daring' Dashwood and his faithful ghoul manservant Argyle will never be topped for in game radio!

Fallout 3 and NV are the best "modern" ones. 4 is very...meh and much less of an RPG. The map is also tiny and much less fun to just explore.

Playing through fallout 4 on survival mode. I really enjoyed fallout 3 with mods and dlc but fallout 4 is superior.

Fallout 4 has much bigger map, you move faster though so it does not feel much bigger than 3, but it’s least 25-30% bigger.

Locations in four are better as more varied, in 3 every second location is a subway station. However there are some superb locations in 3 too such as dunwich and the Gary vault.

Fallout 4 has far superior combat, with a lean cover system built in. 4 also runs better with hardly any crashes and looks beautiful in vanilla version.

Fallout 3 can look good but you have to use mods, then good luck with all the crashing.

I can’t remember if 3 had crafting in It but 4 has a good crafting system with all weapons and armour upgradable. You can also build up about 15 settlements with around 20 settlers in each.

Don’t get me wrong, fallout 3 is a great game, I loved it but it’s dated now and 4 is superior in my opinion.

If you are going to play both then play 3 first, because as soon as you play 4 you won’t want to go back.

I'd go with Fallout 3. I honestly never played the older Fallout games before 3. I found myself playing 3 more than I did 4(please, I don't want to speak about Vegas). I felt like there was more you could do on 3 than 4. 3 had more humor and a better story. 4 has good graphics and very cool mods - you can also great your own settlement on Fallout 4 which was always awesome!

I think FO3 is the best start point, hard to go backwards from 4.

I didn't mind NV but found it quite empty, in FO3 every building, sewer entrance and subway leads to decent area to explore, Vegas seems like miles of nowhere, interspersed with 1 room houses.

Fallout 2 if you don't mind aging graphics.
Fallout 1, 2 are completely different games than Fallout 3, NV and Fallout 4. They are similar to Ultima series. 3rd person isometric RPGs came out 20 years ago.

@smogsy wants to play openworld RPG as we mean it today, so the candidates are FO3, NV, FO4.

As for which one to play, FO4 is the least RPG. NV is the more RPG with the various factions and outcomes. FO3 is in between.

My favourite is FO3 with all it's DLCs. having spend three consecutive xmas holidays playing it. (2008 PC vanilla, 2009 PS3 GOTY, 2010 PC GOTY with graphical mods). The most enjoyable was the 2009 run, where I was few months divorced, had 3 weeks off work and was playing it at the 60" plasma in the living room, in darkness, with pizzas and beers. :)

Fallout 4 is garbage. Everywhere you go 99% of the time NPCs just want to murder you.

Add in all the base building crap and it's an utterly lame game when stood against its predecessors.

Biggest disappointment in gaming history for me, along with CIV6.

Damm I wish I was you. Soooo many hours of gameplay ahead in FO3, NV and FO4.

I would just play them in that order, so Fallout 3, New Vagas then Fallout 4 (including there expansions) all are blasts in there own right and will keep you pre occupied for ages.

I would do Fallout 3 first with the DLC's because it's really what the Fallout world is all about.

Finish the series with Fallout 4 which to me is the best in the series.

If you're not a bitch, I'd suggest

Fallout 1 > 2 (RESTORATION PROJECT on both)

Tactics (pseudo-canon but the best of the series for gameplay, expands on the legendary Deathclaws massively even if the canonical integrity of it is up for debate - although Fallout 4 kinda confirmed Tactics as canon with the airship backstories)

3 > NV > 4

Play them Vanilla, there aren't really any uber game changing mods for them IMO unless you install about 100+ and even then it sorta feels like you're just fluffing up the graphics and injecting a ton of guns and armors you'll never shoot or wear. Though I would get the spouse mod for 4, that mod is extremely well done and IMO fixed the garbage story of 4 as he/she fully functions as a follower with likes, dislikes and interjections on events/conversations. The only upside of voiced protagonists was the ease of engineering a mod like that.
