Fan Filters - Is it Worth it?

Hi,

The topic name pretty much sums the question up :)

I'm using the Phantom 410 case, and have a front & side fan blowing air into the case, and x2 top & the rear fan as exhausts, pushing the air out as it gets warmer and rises. Subsequently with five fans in this case I have powerful air flow, the Noctua DH14 is the next item on my list (recently purchased sound card), which will probably increase air flow even more albeit by a small amount.

I am not using fan filters at the moment, there is a fairly coarse covering on the fans from the case but not something efficient. Dust buildup is not a massive issue since I open my case up and remove any dust about every month. However anything that can help will be useful.

Would anyone recommend filters in a case with lots of air flow? Do they make a big difference?

Thanks in advance :)

IMO What gets sucked in either gets trapped inside or is blown back out again from the exhausts, circulated around the room & you're breathing it.

I have fan filters and they keep the insides very clean, it's taken about a year for the fans to get to the stage where I felt like I should clean them.

Ive got filters, but because im lazy and dont want to clean my PC internals every month or so :p
They can only be an advantage, as it will keep the cooling fins inside the case cleaner, thus aiding cooling.
Also, some dust can be electrically conductive (static build up etc), so less dust leads to a lower chance of component failure!

Hi, thanks for the responses.

Is there a particular brand you would recommend? All of my case fans are the NZXT brand 140mm

Thanks in advance

I have fan filters, the front of my case is caked in dust, and somehow dust has made it into the PC...

Next case I'm going to try and set up a Positive Pressure setup instead of the current Negative Pressure setup I've got.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the input, am I correct in assuming that there is little point in having fan filters on the exhaust fans? Probably a silly question but still :)

I also picked up one of these "rocket" air blowers, in essence it's just a rubber rocket-shaped cyclinder which blasts air out of a nozzle when squeezed, I actually bought it from a local camera shop.

Really good for removing dust in annoying corners without having to take everything out the case, and for cleaning keyboards.

I put filters on my front intake fans and I put filters on my top exhaust fans.

The front filters eat dust up like its going out of fashion, and the top filters stop any dust from falling in the case, when the pc is in sleep mode or off.

I have two cats so dust and fluff is everywhere ! this worked perfectly, I get a very very fine layer of dust after 3 months of usage and collections of dust on the floor out lining the case.

I grab the hoover once a month suck of the dust on the filters and have yet bothered to hoover inside the case.

I have a fan filter on the front which seems to block quite a bit of dust - think I'm going to invest in a couple for the top to stop the dust falling in like hutzdani mentioned.

If you have a lot of intake/airflow, dust filters are quite helpful. I've got two on the front and one on the side for my intake fans, and they do trap a fair amount, especially when on full. You'll only notice how much dust it stops after some weeks though. Makes cleaning inside the case a bit easier.

Really helpful things. They don't catch all of the dust but they do get a fair amount. Certainty makes cleaning the case a lot quicker and less frequent.
