Hi all,

So my trusty Gigabyte 670 has 3 fans, 1 of these has stopped working and I've suffered a couple of system crashes today.

My question is a two parter, would a dieing graphics card cause the system to crash. (Black screen, audio playing in loop and forced to turn off).

And secondly, is replacing the cooler easy/viable? Or at this stage should I look to a new card given it is getting a little old now. (It still runs everything I play fine at 1080p).

Thanks in advance for any input! :)

It could be a sign of a dieing gpu but it could be overheating if one fan has failed. The choices really spend £30 and get an aftermarket cooler with the chance that the gpu is duff or by a new gpu.

What temps you geting ?

Hi all,

Yes, it would. I've been silly enough to forget to replace one of the thermal pads on a GPU's memory chips in the past and had several crashes of this type before the GPU finally gave out and would no longer let me even boot into Windows.

Does the fan start up again if you spin it while the system is on?

if so try bit wd40 on the bearings.

I see, looks like a cooler replacement will be the best option. Temps not great, I've underclocked the card by half, but temps reach around 80c then I get screen flickering... :D rip gtx 670 cooler. May look at the MM for a new one possibly.

Edit - The fan doesn't start at any point, even during booting up completely dead.

Edit 2 - Any recommendations on a new card from Overclockers that has the same power as a 670? And separately any recommendations for a used card besides 670?

A GTX 960 would be faster than your 670 and only costs around £150. That would be where my money would go.

If you go for a 4gb version like this it should last you a few years.

I would firstly check the temps. With 2 fans and no overclock it probably isn't overheating and causing it to crash.

You could send the GPU back if it's under warranty but if it isn't I would email them and ask if they could be so kind and send you a new fan if now there's the auction sites for a replacement fan

A 7950 was about the same power as a 670, theres normally loads of them kicking around second hand super cheap.

I would try and do some sort of fix like these guys are suggesting though, no point spending money if ya dont have to, even if it just means attaching a case fan to the front of the cooler using tiewraps or string or summat.
