Fantasy Authors

With regards to Scott Lynch - he did actually manage to write 3 books - all largely self-contained stories so it isnt really a GRRM or Rothfuss situation.

Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth
Jordan, Robert - Wheel of Time
Moon, Elizabeth - The Deed of Paksenarrion
Novik, Naomi - Temeraire
Robin Hobb- Various Series

Just a few that I haven't seen mentioned.

An author I rarely hear mentioned lately is Jasper Fforde, not so much swords and sorcery fantasy but his books do have fantastical elements.

Love Jasper Fforde. Waiting on the second shades of gray book at the moment.

Also, try Tad Williams memory, sorrow and thorn series.

Yea his Gentleman ******* series is fairly self contained, but even so, we do want to know what happens in the story he set up for the Thorn of Emberlain

I read it decades ago, but the 3 book The Magician series by Feist is fantastic.
Agreed but i did find some of the books quite formulaic but still a very good series, i actually prefered the The Empire trilogy.

I have been on a fantasy binge for the past few years

As already mention above
Robert jordon (wheel of time) GOAT?
Erickson (Malazan) also could be the GOAT?
Rothfus (please release the 3rd book !!!)
George rr martin (asoiaf)
Butcher (i prefered his Codex Alera series)
Tad williams (memory, sorrow and thorn series) currently on book 4, its good but nothing special imo
Robin Hobb
Sanderson (one of my favourites)
John Gwynne (faithfull and the fallen) fantastic series
Mark Lawrence
Brent Weeks
Andrzej sapkowski (the Witcher)
Joe Abercrombie
Gemmell

Stephen R Donaldson - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
Anne McCaffrey - The Dragonriders of Pern etc.
Joe Abercrombi - various
Robert J Crane - the Sanctuary series
Alan Dean Foster - various
Raymond E Feist - various
Fiest’s Riftwar Saga : Magician, Silverthorne and A Darkness At Sethanon are still some of my favourite books.

Enjoyed the Empire series, but I felt it got rather difficult of tell his later books apart.

Mark Lawrence
Brent Weeks
Mark Lawrence is so underrated, all his books are good (even his sci-fi time travel series is really good). I never hear people talking about him but I'd say he's one of the best modern authors. Brent Weeks first series was so-so but Lightbringer was absolutely brilliant, such an unusual concept.

Also as an aside Lawrence is a great author to follow on goodreads, he does lots of recommendations and I've discovered a lot of books through him.

Semi surprised David Eddings has not been mentioned yet. I have read The Belgariad series back in the late 80's and at the time I thought it was pretty good. Maybe now it would seem quite generic though. Stephen R Donaldson is my absolute favourite though.

The first ever fantasy novel I read was Six of Swords by Carole Nelson Douglas. I have no memory of the book whatsoever, since it was about 40 years ago, and to be honest I think I just picked it at random in a book shop, after a friend at school was going on at me about trying fantasy.

Eddings is ok, I quite like the series, but it just doenst quite hit the right notes for me.

As for Donaldson, the most recent additions are bad. :(

Weiss & Hickman - Death Gate Cycle. Better known for their DnD stuff but always thought this series much more interesting.
