Fantasy Time: What do you want to see in 2020?

Something other than LCD (crap tech) but it seems now 360HZ LCD's will be the "In Thing" be it 1080p esports/epeen crap.
And for future surely they will try 480 and go on to 1000hz... LCD should die we have had enough with this tech but then it still sells - but sells because there is no other tech out there because its apparently expensive weather its oled or micro led.

When i jumped back in 2007 from my old sony crt 15" to my 24" 1200p monitor it wasn't the quality of the colours but just the size that made me feel wow. The lcd has crappy colours, tearing, some lag and all the lcd issues and problems we hear day to day. I miss a good old crt - i don't miss how huge they were though lol.

Surprised that some want less than 4k. New gen consoles around the corner, which will push 4K gaming as a baseline for the peasants. Wouldn't want to be using a PC with lower resolution than a console at that point.

No point in 4k if the hardware is not there to give you consistent 144+ frames. In a few years time the GPUs will be able to support this but right now 4k at 60 is not enough.

I don't mind having a 4k 144 monitor / screen now and no gpu fully supporting it. That gives you a bit of future proofing I guess and you can use newer tech later on the same monitor rather than having to change again to a new screen and incur more costs.

I could well be wrong, but as I understand it HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 simply don't have enough bandwidth to do 4K higher than 60Hz... So if a GPU appeared that was powerful enough to max a 4K 144Hz screen then it would have to have HDMI 2.1 or DP 2.0 outs, and unless the screen has them as inputs too, then it's all moot...

If I recal it is DP1.4 4k 120Hz for 8bpc so 98ish for 10bpc I think.

They do all sorts of tricks to by pass that, but its time they started implementing DP2.0 or HDMI 2.1. I am amazed that HDMI2.1 is not yet implemented yet. I can see why TV's didn't yet because there was no need for it until last year when the first TVs with 4k and 120hz support appeared, but monitors you could say the gpu stagnation might be the reason.

3000 series from Nvidia with 30 to 50% performance increase across the board will be able to, though they will be too expensive for most people.

I seem to remember 60FPS was the target to try and hit when some game were running like 30-45FPS (FarCry AAA titles era/timescale) the only reason we have 120-144HZ+ monitors is due to the fact LCD is crap and it is to try make it smoother/less blurry.

60FPS/HZ on a CRT will be smooth but flicker if you set the screen to 60HZ but set it to 85HZ and 60FPS will be fine.

It doesnt actually. The LG OLED screen size is still too big at 48" for most and the mini LED screens are all £3500+ and wont be out until second half of 2020 or even later if they get delayed again as the panel was originally meant to be out now.

With the smallest OLED sized LG 48" panel they could make a 38" 1440p OLED 144Hz panel for about £700. That would fly off the shelves. or a 3840 x 1600 45" OLED ultrawide screen for around a £1000.

Mini LED with FALD are clearly going to be way too expensive for most normal people for years.

I thought the 60hz 1152 zone 4k 32" none gaming professional screen was bad enough at £3k but I could see why a professional would spend that money. But expecting gamers to drop £3500+? No way.

Do you render at 4k?

I think there is going to be a bit of a split at 4K in terms of adoption and also somewhat an aspect in terms of stuff that makes heavy use of mouse input that at first people won't be too bothered by the compromise between covering a lot of pixels when moving any distance while retaining precision for smaller movements but with time like high polling mice and high refresh screens, etc. people will start to appreciate the difference.

4K is very nice for some things but there are still areas where beyond 1440p the story is less straightforward than previous resolution jumps.

And like with those I will get people who rubbish my opinion on it, etc. but then a few years later will be signing the praises of it :s

I don't get why 4K is taking so long to get anywhere - I've had my 60hz 4k monitor since 2014 & have mostly been successful in playing games at 4k at good enough or perfect framerate since then.

I want a better monitor (HDR/higher refresh rate) but I really don't want to lose 4k.

So, realistically, we’ll be getting more of the same.

But, in a perfect world, what new products/features would you like to see announced or showcased at CES and beyond in 2020?

Mine’s a little lame, but I have a bit of a Razer fetish. I have all Razer peripherals, even the chroma speakers, and would love to get hold of a Razer monitor to match.
However, the only one that exists is a 27 inch, and I’d absolutely love to see a 34 inch ultra wide.

Would also be great to at least see some concept designs for OLED monitors. Right now if you want OLED it’s a 55 inch tv minimum, which is plain silly.

Also, not exactly a monitor feature, but directly related, I’m assuming the new generation of GPUs will have the newer HDMI standard to output 4K at high refresh rates. That’s a given though, right?

What are you guys looking out for?
I got a razer croma cyanosa keyboard for Christmas and I love it - much better LED lights and quality feel than my other keyboards and yet not a klicky mechanical. I also have a basic razer mouse as a spare but that feels and works very well. so I am finding out about razer products now.

As mentioned above good quality control :D

Would love something around the 28" size with the image quality of my Dell U2913WM but higher contrast combined with the performance of my S2716DG and at least 120Hz at 1440p.
that would be nice - I am looking for a monitor like that

I've waited about 3-4 years for a 144hz 1440p IPS at 24-25" but seems like that's just a dream. Have lost hope so will be looking to buy something else in the coming weeks.

Basically a 40” version of the 48” LG OLED CX TV that is coming out, for £600 or less :D

I mean, yes!! Obviously your price is mental, but a 40 inch would be fantastic!!
Well my thinking is I got my 55” B9 on Black Friday for under a grand, so not too unreasonable to expect it to hit that price on a Black Friday for the much smaller screen. Certainly would never expect that to be the RRP :p

It is a fantasy after all. Chances are it would be closer to £700-800 on sale.
