FAO Mods: Forum Request

Yeah, really not a fan of forums that do that. I just find that if my mouse is over a link accidentally and it displays something, it blocks out everything else that I might be reading. Like links in news articles where they try to sell you things when you go over them. Annoying! I then have to actively move my mouse away from the links, like on those forums where you open the thread by clicking the box (as well as the actual title). If the window needs selecting to that scrolling will work on my mouse, I'd prefer to do it where I want than going to the side. Bah.

It does not blank out everything else. It's one line that barely covers the link to the thread it relates to.

I hate that too, it's really annoying when you get links in posts that pop-up in massive bubbles however I think that for thread titles it would be pretty useful especially as the chances are that you wouldn't be reading much in the thread list anyway other than thread titles.

I skim read, so when that feature flickers up a line of text as I move the mouse around (usually absent mindedly) I tend to snap my attention to it for a second and I'll catch a couple of words that mean nothing at all and it annoys the hell out of me.

Tranceaddict has the feature, I really like it.

It doesn't auto-pop it, you need to hover over t for 2 seconds.

EDIT - It also saves bandwidth, rather load a line of text than an entire page ;)

It's useless, I just tried one out and there aren't enough words to let you know anymore than the title... Also the mysteriousness of thread titles is what gives them their fun :)

I HATE it when forums do that. It just ruins the feel and present popups where I don't want them. Clicking does involve A LOT of effort though eh.

Is it a standard feature of vB? If not you are right, it has been stated that the forum software will not be 'hacked' to allow any modifications like that.

I find that feature quite handy when I see vague thread titles in other places but making people use correct descriptions in their thread titles would do exactly the same job.
I think it is a standard feature on this version of vB, but they turned it off to save server load.

It involves a lot more effort and time than mousing over does, yes. It also uses a lot more bandwidth.

All these people moaning about websites that have this option enabled - you do realise you can turn it off in your user settings?

This would cost a lot more in bandwidth per month so I can't see it ever being enabled.

It would also increase MySQL load which would make the forums slower for everyone.

If it is so bad then why do most other forums have it enabled.

Also surely being able to see the contents of the opening post without clicking on the link will save the server some bandwidth and load, so it will help to balance things out?

I'm a member on The OP's suggested site and it's a nice feature to have. However on another forum where there at least 350 people logged (football Fans forum)there is a noticeable degrade in performance

compared to what? having it switched off on the same forum, or compared to other forums? I mean if the forum is just sluggish then it might be sluggish even without it enabled, if the server isn't powerful enough.

It's a whole new ball game when you have the amount of users that OcUK does, the load on the server can increase really quite dramatically.

I regularly visit another forum which has 1000+ people online; it has the feature enabled and is always fast.

Not many forums have the same amount of load that OcUK has. Also OcUK's server is probably quite old now. Don't quote me on that though :p

There would be one additional SQL query per thread. Multiply that by all the sub-forums. Multiply it again by the number of active users. And that's how much additional load you've just placed onto MySQL. OK it could be +/- a bit due to several other variables but it will certainly end up, on average, being a higher SQL load.

How would it? You're not thinking it through. If people mouseover but then don't view the thread, surely the bandwidth used will be significantly less?

So it could actually save bandwidth!
