Far cry 2 - cant get into it!

Just got onto the second map :)

Really enjoyable game tbh, the only downside for me is that every gun you have is underpowered, whereas the enemy seem to cut you down in no time using the same weapon :(

Scort.

If there's one area in gaming that frustrates, its bad game design...

This game looks fantastic, sounds brilliant, very atmospheric, I really wanted to like it

The enemies have superhuman aiming and eyesight, rendering stealth useless.
The bullets from the weapons i used i think were made of rubber, either that, or the enemies have steel armour from head to toe
The way the map is used is awful, got ran over multiple times by a jeep while checking it.
No way of shooting while in vehicles, yet enemies can shoot back as there's always 2 of them
get past a guard post, kill all gurads and blow up their shacks...5 minutes later on the way back it's like it never happened, the shacks are rebuilt, and the same 5 guards have risen from the ashes
but the biggest sin of all is a ludicrous save point system which completely cripples the game, which devs idea was this? how can a playtester not see this?...
Example...Spend 30 mins finding then starting a mission, get killed, reload last save point from 30 minutes ago, and re trace steps...
Definitely the biggest disappointment of the year, no doubt the PC version will have a save anywhere feature, why in the world they decided to ruin this game is beyond me.
could and should have been a fantastic game, the original Farcry (PC) walks all over this
9/10 graphics and sound
1/10 gameplay from the stone age

Nope, it doesn't, still has the save 'box' system. Great for some games, but open world ones with huge sums of traveling just doesn't work for me.

As i said previously, this game is pretty much completely unrelated to the original farcry. The plot, setting, characters and most importantly developers are all completely different. It is farcry in name only, try Crysis, that's made by the same guys that made the original Farcry.

9/10 graphics and sound

Does voice acting count as sound? If so then i very much disagree, worst voice acting EVER. Everyone talks really fast and without any emotion at all sotheyendupsoundinglikethis.

I've heard much, much worse. They are just being Africaan.

We'll have to agree to disagree i'm afraid then. It is in my eyes just dire voice acting, i've heard plenty of real Africaan accents and while i can see the similarity in terms of the actual accen they do actually speak with emotion and above all, the occasional pause.

But hell yeah, the voice acting, have to agree, it really was apalling from the little i did hear before i gave up on it all.

All I can think of now is a 1940's - 50's Black & White American movie...

Thanks for the constructive post Bruce, much better than the typical “it sucks, avoid” post :)

I’ll try to be as constructive with my reply now:

The enemies have superhuman aiming and eyesight, rendering stealth useless.
The bullets from the weapons i used i think were made of rubber, either that, or the enemies have steel armour from head to toe

Totally agree with these comments, it is a shame that the devs dropped the ball on these two points, as they can be very frustrating at times.

The way the map is used is awful, got ran over multiple times by a jeep while checking it.

I take it you mean the navigation map? If so, I disagree, I personally felt it added something a little different to the game, and as with some of the other player animations helps to keep you part of the play (god I’m sounding like a reviewer now!).

No way of shooting while in vehicles, yet enemies can shoot back as there's always 2 of them

If you have a mounted weapon, you can switch seats to use it. Whilst this is a bit of hassle, it makes encounters with enemy vehicles a little more interesting I feel.

but the biggest sin of all is a ludicrous save point system which completely cripples the game, which devs idea was this? how can a playtester not see this?...

Totally disagree here, the save system is good, it makes you think through your missions more; for example if you have to cross from one side of the map to the other, you look to see where saves are, weapons shops, guard posts etc – or at least I do. When I get a mission, I don’t travel straight there, I head in the general direction (unless using the bus), and plan my attack on the way (making sure I re-stock with fresh weapons and save).

I think this is where one of the biggest ‘Marmite factors’ comes into play – most people playing this, who have come from other FPS games, will simply go from A (getting the mission) to B (the actual mission) as fast as possible, so that they can rinse and repeat. But I think the game has been designed for the other majority who will still go this route, but by many ‘sub routes’ A – A1 – A2 – A3…. And so one :D

Example...Spend 30 mins finding then starting a mission, get killed, reload last save point from 30 minutes ago, and re trace steps...

Think this highlights my point, from what you have written, you (to me) would fall into the first example of player I gave above.

Definitely the biggest disappointment of the year, no doubt the PC version will have a save anywhere feature, why in the world they decided to ruin this game is beyond me.

A bit harsh, if anything, I personally think that Halo 3 was the biggest disappointment of this year, if it was released this year? Anyway, I don’t think that FC2 deserves the roasting it is apparently getting, if played as more of an adventure game, than a FPS, people may see it in a different light.

9/10 graphics and sound
1/10 gameplay from the stone age

You’re probably on the button with the first score you’ve given it (I’d say it’s more 7.5/10), but the gameplay isn’t that bad, and certainly not from the stone age.

Scort.

Hate it tbh but my Broinlaw who is south African loves it.

He can't believe how much it feels like Africa and how the locals are really like that and them using afrikaans and accents ect

They did a really good job

But for me Gameplay is tosh with tedious gunfighting not very good :/

Too much effort went into the graphics but not enough into the gameplay. It's so boring, it feels like you have "too much freedom" with no Goal, everywhere you drive your ambushed by militia every minute, there is no real storyline to follow and it's annoying trying to locate stupid diamonds just so you can buy a weapon that won't jam everytime you empty half a magazine.

The map just feels clunky, i think the idea was to make it realistic in the sense that if you were in hostile territory, you couldn't put a real world on pause to check your whereabouts...thing is though, games are meant to be fun, and its no fun looking at a map, and while doing so, a jeep comes outa nowhere, runs you over, DEAD....realistic, yes, fun, hell no.

again, changing positions in the vehicles to enable shooting is realistic, but its just not fun, its cumbersome and frustrating.

A save system in an open world game of this size should be a more user friendly, save anywhere system...give the player some freedom...

Saints Row 2 is an open world game, probably similar in terms of game size and completion hours...yet they managed to get the design spot on...save anywhere, checkpoints within the larger missions, above all else user friendly and enjoyable to play.

Righto, my Farcry2 is getting traded much quicker than i anticipated lol..tomorrow for Fallout 3, hopefully won't be the disappointment this game was.

Loving this game, im playing it on Infamous, so the enemies are a genuine threat rather than a minor irritation. It makes you either use stealth to skirt around the road blocks or be a bit more tactical when clearing one out(and therefore not boring). Ive Just purchased a silenced MP5 and saving for the camo suit, to make it easier still.

The map isnt great, I wish there was a compass for a start and i wish it just auto saved when entering a safehouse, rather than have to go through the menus every time.
