Farcry 2, Why all the hate,

Most rubbish game I have ever played. I will acknowledge two things it did very well:

1. Best fire-effects I have seen in a PC game so far
2. Great sound that really made you feel you were out there in the bush

The bad..hmm everyone has already mentioned them. You spend a hair-raising 10-15mins in a gun battle butchering baddies at a roadblock. You then jump in your Jeep with a satisfied grin and speed off....but if you happen to do a U and head back...ooooohhhh yea....that roadblock you just cleaned out? Yea that one. Well..the bad guys are all back! In less than 300 seconds after you killed em all!

Another gripe: the "convoys" you have to "intercept" . Except that the convoy is going round and round a track like a F1 racing car so its a no-brainer on how to trash it after a while. Couldnt they make it more realistic by having them drive across the map?

I say all this with regret - because this game HAD the potential to be SO much more.

Far Cry 2 didnt last long on my computer and my Samsung HD has still not forgiven me for installing it. I think the DVD is a drinks coaster in the living room.

which bit did you like the bit where ALL the missions were identical or the fact that you kill all the bad guys at a check point, drive 5 meters up the road turn back and they are all back alive in the same spots with the same guns?

Personally, I loved the way those checkpoint could be full of soldiers from the army you're doing a mission for, and yet they'd still shoot you, but I think we all know the best part of the game was when they opened up that whole second area... and all the missions were still exactly the same. You can't beat that kind of attention to detail.

Game had a huge amount of potential even tho it was never going to be as ground breaking as farcry 1 however...

It was too slow getting started and the middle of the game was the best by far the first quarter and last quarter of the game was dire.

There was far too much pointless criss-crossing the map and while there was lots of nice side stuff if you found it (that massively added to the story), it was too isolated and spread out with no real flow to it.

Even if they story had been developed better with the side stuff somewhat better meshed in to give it more depth there were too many completely game breaking features which have been posted about time after time but I'm gonna reproduce them:

malaria
over the top weapon degredation
malaria
ai/check point respawning
malaria
needless criss-crossing the map for missions
malaria
repetitive missions
malaria

Really bugs me that whoever was lead on the game design side didn't pickup on these things as the game would have been 10x better with fairly slight tweaks, the malaria thing would have been great as an introduction to africa but popping up numerous times during the game usually at the most annoying moments just killed the enjoyability of the game.

I always expected them to be modded out. Was this ever the case? I eventually stopped checking on any mods that fixed the game and moved on.

This is one of the other things that really annoyed me about the game - I have the experience with game development, programming, level design, etc. to have taken the game tweaked it into something better in a very short space of time if modding was available (outside the limited ability to make multiplayer maps) - a lot of the things that really drag it down could be fixed extremely easily with fairly minor tweaking.

I thought it was one of those 6/10 games with some cool and interesting ideas but poor execution.

Not deserving of hate per se but a shame because of the missed opportunity.

I liked how you turned out to be kind of the bad guy. It's the first game since Deus Ex I've played that turned the FPS convention of "Get mission, shoot dudes" into something to think about.

I liked the setting. Watching the sun rise over the veldt was kinda cool. As was everything being dusty, dirty, decaying. They didn't follow through on it hard enough but.

With a bit more work and better beta testing it would have been an 8/10 classic imo.

One of the main issues for me was the A.I. Fail to kill an enemy in 1 silenced shot and every opponent within a 50 mile radius knew your precise location, with no way of becoming hidden again. This became far more irritating when the enemies got mortars later in the game, because if you stood still for more than 5 seconds you'd get bombarded by pinpoint accurate mortars from the other side of the map.
