I think these movies have become very self aware at this point. We got into it for the topical car culture at the time and now we're in it for the ridiculous action. They're Hollywood B movies.

Well the space shuttle RX-7 (early model FC I think) with it's heat tiles and RCS thrusters and the cast wearing space suits (deep diving suits made to look space worthy anyway) are the biggest indications

It was what I expected. Turn off your brain and enjoy the action the scenes. The plot has just enough string to get you from one scene to the next.
They are very aware of what the movie has become and make jokes about it early on in the film. At this point its sort of a superhero film.
I do wish they had more exotic cars though. But a lot of the scenes don't lend well to it.
I happened to be in the same city when they were filming one the scenes and there was a strange satisfaction of seeing that scene in action.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo! The Suicide Squad got good reviews so far.. but after the first I won't hold my breath.
