Hey guys,

I'm looking for a compact (2.5", no independant PSU), but fast USB 3.0/ lightning hard drive to use with my Macbook Pro. It will be used for storing and editing photo and video (raw 1080p, compressed 4k and 21mp stills) so pace is very important:I have a buffalo PNTU3 at the moment, and it is way too slow.

Any suggestions? At least 1tb, ideally 2tb.

Thanks,

Tom.

here are some external USB 3 2TB drives with no extra PSU

im afraid i cannot comment on speeds as not used any of them drives

i have a USB 3 external Seagate drive which is USB3 and as a external PSU and when coming over one big file to it I get around 130mb and when its loads of smaller files or individual files it was about 50-60mb

a bit hard to comment when the descriptions don't give you the speeds they can do or reach

SSD would be great but beyond my budget....do they not do hybrid usb drives these days? Can't seem to see any.

from what i have seen its either a standard HDD or a small SSD in a enclosure (60GB) for about £50 but not enough space for your needs.

only option is if you get a SSHD and your own enclosure and do it yourself but then you will need a extra power cable to power it

hmm..

realistically, how much faster are modern 3.5" desktop USB/Thunderbolt drives? I mean the mechanical single 2tb ones.

Trying to find comparisons between hard drives is nearly impossible, unless I'm missing something I can't see any databases or some such that show you the read/write speeds of most models on the market?

to be honest any WD external hard drive with no extra PSU will be fine or other brand.

they use the 2.5" HDD size so it doesn't require extra power.

I had a WD my passport 1TB and it done me for a good 3 years
