Im thinking of getting a new HD to speed up my mac-mini a bit, does anyone know what the fastest suitable non SSD drive would be?

I remember reading a while ago about the Seagate Savio, would that create too much heat for the mac mini's cramped insides?

The Savvio is a SAS drive, unless the mac mini has a SAS controller (which I doubt) then it plain won't work.

velociraptor
Might not fit due to the 15mm height (6mm more than a standard 2.5" drive) but a decent bet if it will.

The WD Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM is a decent offering....
Failing the VR this is the best option.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

I do like the look of the velociraptor, but given that its more expensive than these samsung SSD's..which would be the better option?

Is the velociraptor going to create a lot more heat than the SSD? Or is the heatsink only that big so it fits in a 3.5 bay..

It'll create more heat than an SSD. Removing the heatsink apparently voids the warranty, so it might be more than just a bracket to allow it to fit in a 3.5 bay.

A lot depends on airflow though, it's not going to be useful to compare one drive temperature against another if they're not in exactly the same circumstances.

The Velociraptors produce a whole lot less heat than Raptors though.
